Blue Bar Introduce
In the heart of the Theater District, where the energy of Broadway meets the sophistication of Midtown, there exists a bar that is more than just a place for a drink; it is a piece of New York City history. The **Blue Bar**, located within the legendary Algonquin Hotel, has been a favorite haunt for writers, actors, and artists since it first opened its doors in 1933. It was originally named for the signature blue-hued lighting, a concept suggested by actor John Barrymore, who believed it was the most flattering light for actors’ faces. While the original physical space has evolved through the hotel's storied history, the current Blue Bar retains that same sense of timeless elegance and intimate ambiance. One patron described the current space as "a beautiful space, with marble throughout," and another noted its "awesome vibe" that remains consistent despite changes. It is a cozy, trendy, and decidedly upscale establishment that serves as a perfect escape from the bustling city streets just outside its doors. The bar is known for its fast service and an impressive selection of libations, with a full menu that goes far beyond typical bar snacks, offering a high-end dining experience from breakfast to late-night.
The atmosphere at Blue Bar is one of its most compelling features. It manages to feel both cozy and upscale at the same time, making it suitable for a variety of occasions. Its small, intimate setting is ideal for a quiet conversation or a special date night. As one reviewer aptly put it, the space is "quite tiny" and may not be the best choice for a large group, but this only adds to its charm and exclusivity. The crowd is a pleasant mix of hotel guests and tourists, drawn to the bar's rich history and its proximity to Times Square and Broadway. For those looking to enjoy a high-quality drink in a historical setting, the Blue Bar is an ideal choice. It has a well-deserved reputation for its **great beer selection, great cocktails, and great wine list**, offering something for every connoisseur. The expertly crafted cocktails, in particular, are a highlight, described by patrons as "good" and "potent," even if they come with a higher-end price tag. The bar also offers a full table service, which complements its extensive food menu, allowing guests to enjoy a complete meal without having to leave the comfort of their table. The combination of a luxurious, historic setting with a comprehensive and high-quality offering makes Blue Bar a standout destination in a city full of options.
Blue Bar's status as a bar within a historic hotel also means it is a place for more than just drinks. It provides a full-service dining experience, which is a rare and welcome feature for a bar. The menu, thoughtfully organized into "Chapters," takes guests on a culinary journey from hearty breakfast options to sophisticated dinner entrées. One can start the day with an **Avocado Benedict** or a **Challah French Toast**, and return in the evening for a pre-theater dinner or a post-show drink. The quality of the food is consistent with the upscale atmosphere, offering dishes that are both classic and creative. The availability of **Oysters Rockefeller**, **Duck Confit**, and a **NY Strip Steak** makes it clear that this is a place for a serious meal, not just an afterthought. While some reviews mention that the portions might be on the smaller side, the quality and flavor of the dishes are designed to match the high-end pricing. The bar also provides a variety of small plates and comforting favorites like **Truffle Fries** and **Buffalo Chicken Dip**, which are perfect for sharing while enjoying a drink. The opportunity to dine in such a legendary setting, where literary giants and Broadway icons once gathered, is a unique experience that is well worth the visit for anyone in the city.
---Blue Bar is conveniently located at **59 W 44th St, New York, NY 10036, USA**, placing it in the very center of the Theater District. The bar is a part of the historic **Algonquin Hotel**, a landmark known for its literary past and its proximity to the city's most famous theaters. This central location makes it an ideal spot for a pre-show cocktail or a post-theater nightcap. It is easily accessible via public transportation, with multiple subway lines and bus routes just a short walk away, making it a convenient destination for both tourists and locals alike. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is the small bar inside the Algonquin hotel. It's a beautiful space, with marble throughout. The actual bar is quite tiny - I would not recommend a large group visit at the same time. The drinks we had were quite good, but pricey. Definitely worth a stop if you're staying in the Algonquin as well.
September 18 · Jeremy YowellUnfortunately, original Blue Bar moved. It became just a lobby bar with some blue lights. It was disappointing. But cocktails are still good. Prices are little high end and the portion are smaller.
August 05 · mahir meriçWe had great cocktails here and there was a great atmosphere- just wish we had gotten to see the cat Hamlet, maybe he was sleeping! I had the French 75, loved that cocktail.
September 14 · Emer FoleyCool bar. Piano but no music. Seems like a missed opportunity.
August 22 · JR CarterSpent a fair amount of time at this bar a few years ago with some friends. Asked for the most expensive tequila on the menu and had a great bruschetta. Atmosphere was super delicious and staff were also very delish. Thanks for the memories. This location, and NYC will always feel like a safe haven for me.Xo
