Today was my wife’s birthday. We chose this place hoping for a nice meal. From the moment we walked in, it felt like stepping into a trash dump. We were greeted by a female staff member with the nastiest attitude imaginable — like we owed her a million bucks. We had barely started ordering (just the second dish!) when she just walked away without a word — no “I’ll be right back,” no explanation — nothing. Just vanished like we were invisible. And mind you, the place was nearly empty. It’s not like they were busy. If this is how they treat customers during slow hours, I can’t even imagine what they’re like when it’s full. My wife was disgusted, and I was furious. I pulled her up and we walked out immediately — I’d rather stay hungry than be insulted like that.In New York City, with so many great restaurants to choose from, how dare a place like this operate with such disgraceful service? You’re not running a business — you’re driving people away on purpose! Here’s my message to you: If your goal is to shut down, just keep up the attitude — you’re already halfway there. - hang Ben

Byung Chun Soondae Introduce

Welcome to the heart of authentic Korean cuisine right here in New York City. While Manhattan’s K-Town has its draws, New Yorkers in the know understand that Queens—specifically Flushing—is home to some of the most genuinely traditional and deeply satisfying Korean dining experiences. Amongst these culinary gems is a spot dedicated to one of Korea’s most unique and beloved comfort foods: Byung Chun Soondae.

This establishment, often celebrated by the local Korean community, has carved out a niche as the go-to destination for high-quality, house-made Soondae (Korean blood sausage) and a wide array of soul-warming soups and stews. It’s a place that doesn't just serve food; it offers a taste of true Korean tradition and home cooking, attracting diners from all corners of the city seeking an authentic culinary journey.

Introduction / Overview: The Home of Authentic Soondae

Byung Chun Soondae is not your typical Korean BBQ joint; it specializes in a specific, comforting style of traditional Korean fare. The restaurant’s namesake, Soondae, is a savory blood sausage typically made with cellophane noodles, barley, and pig's blood, prepared daily to ensure maximum flavor and freshness. This traditional delicacy is the star of the show, but the menu extends far beyond, covering a spectrum of hearty stews and classic dishes that embody Korean comfort food.

The atmosphere here is generally described as casual, focusing squarely on the food quality and authenticity rather than trendy decor. For many New Yorkers, this is precisely the appeal—a no-frills, bustling spot that delivers robust, delicious flavors. Patrons often describe the cuisine as the "best traditional Korean food in the New York City area," highlighting the affordable prices and the freshness of the banchan (side dishes), particularly the kimchi and pickled radish. By offering an alternative to the usual Korean barbecue or bibimbap, Byung Chun Soondae provides an unforgettable culinary adventure steeped in the flavors and traditions of Korea.

What is Worth Choosing: Menu Highlights for NYC Foodies

For first-time visitors or seasoned patrons looking for the best that Byung Chun Soondae has to offer, the selection of soups, stews, and grilled meats provides an authentic taste of Korea. The restaurant’s devotion to traditional recipes makes several items stand out as essential choices.

The absolute must-try is, of course, the Byeongocheon Sausage Potage (순대국). This savory blood sausage soup, often served with a rich, nourishing broth and various organ meats, is the dish the restaurant built its reputation on. It is the ultimate comfort food, especially on a chilly New York day. For those who want to sample the soondae without the soup, ordering Steamed Blood Sausage (순대한접시) allows you to enjoy the freshly prepared sausage on its own, often accompanied by internal organs.

Another highly recommended and beloved dish is the Byeongcheon Pork Back Bones Soup (뼈다귀해장국). This hearty pork bone hangover stew, known for its deep, flavorful broth and tender chunks of meat, is a celebrated choice for any time of the day. Similarly, the Cheongjindong Cattle Blood Soup (선지해장국) is a traditional Korean soup known as a classic 'hangover cure,' packed with cattle blood and served with rice.

Beyond the soups, the menu features substantial main dishes perfect for sharing or a truly satisfying individual meal. Consider the Pork Wrap Made With Pork Belly (보쌈), a platter of tender, steamed pork belly meant to be wrapped in lettuce with spicy kimchi and other condiments. Alternatively, the Grilled Spareribs (돼지갈비) offers tender pork ribs with a rich, meaty flavor, often enjoyed alongside cold noodles or rice.

A great value and a way to sample the diversity of the menu are the combo meals. For a complete dining experience, the Pork Back Bone Stew + Big Pig's Feet + Hangover Soup + 1 Soju is a significant offering for a group, combining some of their most popular items. Individual combination meals, such as the various cold noodle options with Grilled Spareribs (like the Mul Naengmyeon or Bibim Naengmyeon combos), provide a perfect contrast of rich meat and refreshing noodles.

Ultimately, Byung Chun Soondae is worth choosing for its uncompromising dedication to authentic Korean comfort food. It is one of Queens' true gems—a spot where you can find high-quality, traditionally prepared meals at reasonable prices, served virtually any hour of the day or night. While some visitors have noted that the experience can be very casual and occasionally feel rushed, for many New Yorkers, this is simply the cost of experiencing a truly "legit" and beloved local favorite that delivers consistently delicious, soulful Korean cuisine. For those craving real Soondae Guk and other traditional stews that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in the city, Byung Chun Soondae is the definitive Flushing destination.
