What Is Worth Choosing
For the New York diner, Dog Day Afternoon is worth choosing for several compelling reasons, primarily its dedication to an elevated, authentic American hot dog experience.
The clear standout choice is, without a doubt, the Chicago Dog ($9.50). For those who know and love this distinct, celebrated style, finding an authentic version in NYC can be a quest—and this restaurant is famed for delivering. However, local New Yorkers who prefer their regional classic can opt for the New York Dog ($8.50). This choice allows patrons to compare and contrast two of the nation's most famous hot dog styles side-by-side.
Beyond the namesake items, the commitment to variety is commendable. The inclusion of specialty sausages like the hefty Hot Italian Beef ($17.00) and the Polish ($12.50), along with unique side dishes like the Southern-inspired Jambalaya ($7.00), elevates the menu beyond basic street food. For a truly hearty, comforting meal, pairing a classic dog with the Frito Pie ($8.50)—a classic comfort food mashup of chili, cheese, and corn chips—is highly recommended.
Finally, Dog Day Afternoon offers an invaluable experience for Brooklyn locals: a reliable, casual eatery with Outdoor seating right by the park. It’s a perfect urban oasis where you can enjoy high-quality comfort food quickly and affordably. It’s a place that transcends the simple concept of an "american restaurant" by focusing intensely and expertly on a single, beloved category: the hot dog. For a genuine, satisfying, and quick meal in the Prospect Park area, Dog Day Afternoon should be your first choice.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dog Day is a truly special place and the reason I moved to the neighborhood. I otherwise consider myself a vegetarian of 8 years. These hot dogs are divine any time of the year, but here’s my advice:On a crisp fall day, don’t eat until 2pm. Have two Chicago dogs and a milkshake, then walk through the park. A cure-all.Last October I had a great conversation with a zombie witch who shared my table. It told me to always, always answer when I hear the hot dogs calling. Sometimes I hear the dog’s call ringing through Greenwood Cemetery treetops at night and I have to wait up all night in a cold sweat praying for noon to arrive.
June 19 · Benjamin WichmanI'm happy that I finally found a place that serves great Chicago dogs in NYC. I'll definitely return to try the other options on the menu.
September 19 · Christopher ZThis spot is undoubtedly one of the best hotdog restaurants in NYC! The service is friendly and welcoming, the ingredients feel very fresh and high quality and the hotdogs are just generally super delicious and photogenic. Will most definitely be back!
April 17 · Alon Juwalsolis Chicago hot dog, neon green relish and all. has the look and feel of a family run hole-in-the-wall, in the best way possible. not the spot you'd take your in-laws, but maybe the spot you'd take your street food loving hipster partner. still savoring the tang of the spicy peppers.
May 03 · Jesse YThe hot dog was......a hot dog. Fresh ingredients, good proportion. I enjoyed the service, very pleasant young man tending the counter. Just not sure a hot dog is worth a whooping $10 🤔. Glad I tried it, but....... very replicable hot dog.
