Dragon Palace Introduce
Dragon Palace, located in Rahway, New Jersey, is a well-established Chinese and Asian restaurant that has earned a loyal following among local diners and even visitors from out of state. It stands out in the competitive New Jersey Chinese takeout landscape not just as a local eatery but as a destination for expertly prepared Chinese-American comfort food. The establishment operates with a focus on delivering quick, satisfying, and high-quality meals, ensuring every dish is made with fresh ingredients.
What truly sets Dragon Palace apart, according to highly discerning customers, is the masterful application of "Wok Hei." This Cantonese culinary technique, which translates to the "breath of the wok," imparts a signature smoky, complex flavor and expertly cooked texture, especially noticeable in their Fried Rice. This technique, often missing in contemporary takeout spots, suggests a commitment to authentic Cantonese cooking principles, a quality appreciated by long-time fans of Chinese cuisine in the Tri-State area. The Roast Pork Fried Rice, in particular, is noted for being abundant in fresh pork, bean sprouts, and onions, and is considered by some to be comparable to that of upscale restaurants.
The menu at Dragon Palace covers the beloved classics expected from a neighborhood Chinese restaurant, focusing on flavorful, large-portioned meals perfect for lunch or dinner. The General Tso's Chicken is a particular highlight, consistently reviewed as "excellent." Customers rave that the chicken is cooked perfectly—lightly battered, fried to a crispy exterior, and moist on the inside, often using the preferred dark meat. Importantly, the chicken generously fills the container, demonstrating the restaurant’s commitment to providing excellent value and avoiding the common cost-cutting practice of layering chicken over a mound of rice. While the General Tso's sauce leans toward the sweeter, Americanized Szechuan style common to the region, its overall flavor profile and fresh components, like perfectly steamed broccoli, make it a crowd-pleaser.
The menu features a variety of value-focused items and classic staples that appeal to the New Jersey market looking for a quick, delicious bite:
- Appetizers: Including the classic Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls, essential starts to any Chinese meal.
- Chicken Dishes: Offerings like Chicken with Black Bean Sauce and Chicken with Mushroom are available, often served conveniently with rice for an easy, filling meal.
- Soup: Features standard options such as Wonton Soup and the Wonton Egg Drop Soup Mixed, served with traditional crispy noodles.
- Fried Rice: Includes both basic options like Vegetable Fried Rice and customer favorites such as Roast Pork Fried Rice, which showcases the restaurant's signature Wok Hei technique.
- Chow Mein: Classic noodle dishes like Chicken Chow Mein and Shrimp Chow Mein are served with rice and noodles.
This focus on quality, generously portioned comfort food has cultivated a strong, loyal customer base, with many noting the consistent freshness of the ingredients and the clean oil used in the preparation—a key indicator of a high-quality establishment.
The restaurant has a traditional storefront setting, which some patrons note shows its age, reflecting its status as a long-standing, neighborhood-focused eatery. While the food quality and quick preparation are exceptional, prospective visitors should be aware that parking can be challenging. The location near the train station and in a busy area means parking options may be limited, and the experience may be more geared toward quick pick-up rather than extended parking. The overall atmosphere is casual, welcoming solo diners and families alike for both lunch and dinner service.
- Takeout: This is a primary function, with food preparation noted to be quick and efficient, perfect for customers in a hurry.
- Dine-in: Available for patrons who wish to enjoy their meal in the casual, family-friendly atmosphere.
- Lunch and Dinner: Open for service during both lunch and dinner hours.
- Quick Bite: Ideal for customers seeking a fast, satisfying meal during a lunch break or on the go.
- Comfort Food Focus: Specializes in the popular, fulfilling Chinese-American comfort dishes that New Jersey diners crave.
- Payment: Accepts Credit Cards for convenient transactions.
- Exceptional Wok Hei Flavor: The paramount highlight is the restaurant's ability to achieve "Wok Hei," or the desired smoky char, especially in the Fried Rice, a culinary technique often missing in contemporary takeout establishments.
- Generous and Honest Portions: Customers consistently praise the large, value-driven portions, with dishes like General Tso’s Chicken filling the container completely, maximizing the protein-to-rice ratio.
- Consistently Fresh Ingredients: The food is noted for being "fresh and delicious," with reviewers emphasizing the quality of the vegetables (like the steamed broccoli) and the freshness of the cooking oil.
- Perfectly Cooked Meats: The General Tso’s Chicken is specifically highlighted for its crispy, light batter and moist interior, indicative of skilled frying technique.
- Quick Preparation: Food is prepared quickly, making it a highly efficient option for a fast lunch or dinner pickup.
- Family-Friendly Environment: The casual atmosphere welcomes all crowds, making it an easy choice for a family meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Casual take out Chinese with poor parking and a storefront that shows its time. Food preparation was quick. Food is fresh and delicious. My order is general tso chicken. As show in the attached photos, the chicken fills up the side of the container and is not layered over rice like some places do to cut costs. The portion is generous and I'm sure they just barely closed the lid. The chicken is cooked perfectly, lightly battered, fried to a crispy exterior and moist interior, I'm guessing dark meat which I prefer anyway. The sauce is tasty in this americanized version. The broccoli is fresh and healthy and steamed perfectly. The fried rice is excellent with pork, bean sprouts, green onions, and yellow onions. This rice was cooked expertly with wok hei, which is char, giving the rice a undertone of smoke. I'd pair this rice against that of upscale restaurants. Pork in the rice is abundant. Exerything in this order was fresh and cooked perfectly. My one negative is that general tso is supposed to have szechaun peppers and have heat, but this was sweet which is on par for most americanized Chinese eateries in the tri state area. As a visitor, I'm saddened I don't live closer to here as I would visit frequently. I do cook Chinese cuisine at home and can appreciate the technique and flavor in this order.Overall, excellent!Edit. This is now my third time coming here. The quality is consistently excellent. As I enjoy my lunch again I can taste that the oil use is fresh and clean.Chinese has been my favorite cuisine since I was a child. For americanize szechuan, this is the BEST takeout I've had. I live in ny and come to this area twice a year for work. I look forward to coming here exclusively every trip. Last year I was disappointed to learn they were closed on the day I came (monday). If I lived local, I'd be a regular for sure!
May 20 · Walter TrieschThis is like the only place in Jersey I have found, that can put Wok Hei on their fried rice.. look it up.. I haven't tasted that for a very long time since the Cantonese people don't really own a lot of Chinese takeout joints anymore. I'm sure they are Cantonese cooks at this restaurant.
October 21 · Catamaran tooNever been here before figured I try it. My usual place is closed. Well I won't be going back to the other place . The food here is delicious and not greasy and there's pieces of pork in the pork fried rice. This place is really good.
October 14 · Merry NittoliI usually order from this place. I’ve tried other spots in Rahway and by far this one is always hot and fresh food. The fried wings never look yellow on the inside. It actually looks like meat. Chicken and broccoli is always good. Today I decided to try the Tso chicken and it’s delicious better then the buffets.
February 28 · Veronica Velazco SanchezAs I was eating I bit something hard spit it out and found a staple. Was excited to try a new takeout place im thoroughly disappointedDon’t come here.
