Greyston Bakery Introduce
For New York residents looking for a delicious treat that truly makes a difference, Greyston Bakery in Yonkers stands out not just as a provider of "awesomely good" baked goods, but as a groundbreaking social enterprise. Established in 1982, Greyston operates on the revolutionary principle that a successful business can—and should—be a powerful engine for social change. While New Yorkers may have already tasted their legendary, fudgy brownies in popular ice cream flavors (a well-known, decades-long partnership with a major ice cream brand), experiencing Greyston means supporting a mission that extends far beyond the kitchen.
The bakery's core philosophy is encapsulated in its famous motto: "We don't hire people to bake brownies; we bake brownies to hire people." This is put into practice through their "Open Hiring" model, which dismantles traditional employment barriers. They offer entry-level jobs without background checks, interviews, or references, believing in a person's potential rather than judging their past. This focus on inclusive employment has made Greyston a vital force for community economic renewal in Yonkers and a global role model for corporate social responsibility.
Despite the profound social mission, the quality of the product remains world-class. Customers consistently rave about the baked goods, with one delighted recipient of an espresso brownie package stating they were "blown away by the quality and flavor." Greyston's offerings, primarily gourmet brownies and blondies, cater to individual customers as well as being a significant wholesale bakery and food manufacturer, producing goods for retail, foodservice, and corporate gifting.
Greyston Bakery is located at 104 Alexander St, Yonkers, NY 10701, USA. Situated in Yonkers, a major city in Westchester County just north of New York City, the location is a significant industrial and community hub.
As an industrial-scale bakery and social enterprise, customer access is managed slightly differently than a typical retail coffee shop. While the location is available for local customers, the facility operates with an "Appointment required" policy for planning visits, which ensures an organized and safe experience, particularly given its function as a food manufacturing facility and wholesale supplier. Customers should always call ahead or check the website to schedule their visit.
A primary commitment of Greyston is physical accessibility. The premises are fully equipped with a Wheelchair Accessible Entrance and a dedicated Wheelchair Accessible Parking Lot. This dedication to accessibility ensures that the facility is welcoming to all members of the community. For those driving, On-site Parking is available, providing a convenient option for pick-ups. For payment flexibility, the bakery accepts Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and even Checks for sales and orders.
Greyston Bakery’s services are highly specialized, focusing on their core products and diverse customer base, from local patrons to major corporate clients:
- In-Store Shopping (Appointment Required): Local customers in the New York area can visit the Yonkers location to purchase baked goods, though scheduling an appointment is necessary due to the facility’s operational nature.
- Curbside Pickup and In-Store Pickup: Convenient services are available for those who prefer to place their order ahead of time and quickly collect it.
- Takeout: Customers can purchase freshly baked products for immediate consumption elsewhere.
- Wholesale Bakery & Food Manufacturing: Greyston serves as a large-scale food manufacturer, producing brownies and other baked inclusions for major ice cream companies, as well as a wholesale bakery supplying retailers and food service operators across the country.
- Corporate Gift Supplier: They offer specialized services for businesses seeking high-quality, ethically sourced gifts for clients, employees, and special occasions, with options for customizing large orders.
- Coffee Availability: Customers visiting the site have access to Coffee, providing a simple, satisfying beverage to accompany their baked purchase.
The distinction of Greyston Bakery in the competitive New York food industry rests heavily on its pioneering business model and commitment to quality:
- Pioneering Open Hiring Model: This is the bakery's most profound feature—a no-questions-asked employment policy for entry-level jobs. This practice breaks down systemic barriers for individuals who have faced homelessness, incarceration, or other challenges, giving them a fair chance at employment and self-sufficiency.
- World-Famous Brownies: Greyston is the exclusive supplier of brownies to Ben & Jerry’s for their most popular ice cream flavors, a testament to the consistent, high-quality, fudgy nature of their signature product. The quality is individually recognized by customers who are "blown away by the quality and flavor" of their products, such as the espresso brownie.
- Social Enterprise (Benefit Corporation): As New York State's first registered Benefit Corporation, Greyston legally commits its profits to support the broader mission of the Greyston Foundation, which provides essential services like affordable housing and job training to the community.
- Diverse Business Capabilities: The company functions expertly as a Food Manufacturer, Food Producer, Food Products Supplier, and Corporate Gift Supplier, handling complex logistics and large-scale orders while maintaining the heart of a local bakery.
- Commitment to Accessibility: The facility ensures a welcoming environment through its provision of a wheelchair-accessible entrance and on-site accessible parking.
For New York-based customers and businesses interested in placing retail or wholesale orders, or for those inquiring about Open Hiring opportunities, Greyston Bakery can be reached using the following details:
- Address: 104 Alexander St, Yonkers, NY 10701, USA
- Phone Number: (914) 375-1510
For individual retail visits, it is strongly recommended that customers call the main number to adhere to the "Appointment required" policy and ensure the best experience.
Choosing Greyston Bakery is about much more than satisfying a craving for a premium baked good; it is a conscious decision to support a revolutionary and successful social mission right here in the New York region. What is truly worth choosing is the seamless blend of commercial excellence and social impact.
The primary reason to choose Greyston is the product itself—the famously decadent, fudgy brownies, including specialty options like the espresso brownie that has garnered outstanding reviews. By purchasing these treats, whether as a personal indulgence via takeout or as a unique corporate gift for clients and employees, you are guaranteeing a quality product.
However, the most compelling reason to choose Greyston is the positive social impact. Every dollar spent on their products is reinvested into their "Open Hiring" model and the accompanying foundation services that support employees and the wider community. This means your purchase directly contributes to providing jobs, training, and a path to self-sufficiency for individuals who face significant employment barriers. In a market saturated with options, Greyston provides a tangible way for New Yorkers to be active, informed consumers who contribute to a healthier, more inclusive local economy.
While one review noted challenges with shipping large wholesale orders in extreme heat, this appears to be a logistical issue related to handling a delicate food product during transport, rather than a reflection of the product quality or the core business model. For local Yonkers and New York customers utilizing the curbside pickup, in-store pickup, or carefully planned corporate gifting services, the risk of damage is minimal, and the reward of supporting this impactful Yonkers institution is immense.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I received my package of brownies today as a welcome gift from my new job, and holy cow!!! I read the reviews but still was blown away by the quality and flavor! The espresso brownie is absolutely fantastic. Thank y’all for everything you do - especially for working to employ disenfranchised folks.
September 10 · Annie BurchillI made a wholesale order over $200. They sent my order without any cooling or protection from too hot weather over it was 100 Fahrenheit. About whole order was half melted chocolate brownie. My customers didn’t like anything. I never recommend their products. I couldn’t sell even 2 counts. I just made 1 sale. All my $250 wasted.
September 02 · Nazilli LLCSaw your amazing bakery featured on world news tonight with David Muir. After hearing your story and what you do to help people thrive in their community, I was compelled to try your brownies. I just received today your box of assorted brownies. WOW!!!THEY ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!My son and I are on our third one and each one is more delicious!!! The vegan brownie is a game changer. They are fresh, moist and packed with so much real flavor. As a baker myself, I know the love, work and commitment it takes to put out a delicious product. They have truly delivered in every way. I can’t wait to share them with family and friends.
November 05 · Cathy GladitschGreyston Bakery's vegan brownies are amazing. If you're vegan (or trying to find vegan alternatives), you can't ask for better brownies. I would never know these weren't regular brownies if they weren't labeled "vegan." They also taste great in Ben & Jerry's Non-Dairy Chocolate Brownie Cream. The best part is that Greyston is known for being a company that goes out of its way to help underprivileged members of the community by providing them with employment opportunities.
January 13 · Ignace ManouryI am a small streamer that does a 12 days of christmas special every year. i ordered the 8 pack combo box with 8 different brownies in it for one of those stream days as a test taste style stream. I was thoroughly impressed by the packaging and how organized all of the brownies were, and i was even more impressed by how all of them tasted. i had a couple friends try them as well and were equally impressed by the overall quality of the brownies, how different each flavor was so that you could not mistake one flavor for another. the chocolate cherry was my personal favorite, while the snickerdoodle was my friends personal favorite. none of them were bad by any means (unless you arent a coffee fan with the espresso roast flavor). overall 10/10 brownies. will be purchasing again.
