Joe's Steam Rice Roll Introduce
For New Yorkers who appreciate authentic, high-quality, and expertly crafted food, Joe's Steam Rice Roll is a hidden gem that has become a sensation. Located on the Upper West Side, this spot specializes in a beloved Hong Kong-style dish that is both a comfort food and a culinary art form: the steamed rice roll, or "cheung fun." It's a no-frills establishment where the focus is squarely on the food, and the result is a truly delicious and satisfying experience. The restaurant’s dedication to perfecting this one dish has earned it a loyal following and a reputation for serving some of the best rice rolls in the city.
Joe's Steam Rice Roll offers a refreshing alternative to the typical Chinese restaurant. The menu is concise and focused, allowing them to master their craft and produce dishes that are consistently exceptional. The rice rolls themselves are a marvel of texture and flavor—super silky, wonderfully chewy, and perfectly complemented by a variety of fillings and sauces. This focus on quality over quantity ensures that every item on the menu is a highlight. The atmosphere is casual and low-key, making it a perfect spot for a quick bite or a relaxed solo dining experience. The limited seating encourages a focus on the food, and it’s clear that the food is the main attraction here.
The establishment's reputation for authenticity is a major draw. Customers, including those with a discerning palate for traditional Hong Kong cuisine, rave about the flavors and textures. The signature roll is a favorite, but the variety of other options, from beef to shrimp to a great vegetarian choice, ensures there’s something for everyone. In a city where it can be hard to find true authenticity, Joe's Steam Rice Roll delivers on its promise of traditional, high-quality Hong Kong fast food. The knowledge of the staff, who can guide you on vegetarian options and sauces, also adds to the welcoming and informed experience.
Beyond the rice rolls, the menu includes other delicious items like the Chinese Crepe and Chineae Pancake, offering a broader taste of traditional street food. The place is also known for being kid-friendly, with high chairs and a kids’ menu available, making it a great option for families. It’s a true testament to the idea that great food doesn't need a fancy setting; it just needs passion and skill, both of which are abundant at Joe's Steam Rice Roll.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Got the vegetable rolll (aka plain roll w/ corn beansprout cilantro scallion n sesame). Pretty good spot for vegetarians. I asked which of the table sauces were veg and he told me the peanut sauce, chili oil and soy sauce. So they were knowledgeable about whats veg. Roll was super silky and chewy and a great texture. With the sauces it was great
August 16 · Priya SarmaAbsolutely delicious signature roll! Will come back to try the other types.Low key and very few seats inside. The food is the main attraction of course.
March 22 · Nidhi ShettyDuring the pandemic, we used to walk from the UWS all the way to the Canal St location, so we were really excited when this location opened. Today, we went back for the first time in a while, and were disappointed. The food is still really good, and we tried the chili oil wontons, which hit the spot; BUT the state of the shop was not great. To start, the screen on the ordering kiosk was FILTHY. Sticky, streaky, gross. Mind you, there's no sink where you can now wash your hands after having to use the nasty order screen. The available tables were not in the worst state, but none of them completely clean. To be fair, they also weren't so dirty that we couldn't wipe them off ourselves, which we did. Lastly, we asked for some tap water to have with our meal, and were told that we couldn't have any - is that even allowed? I was under the impression that food establishments needed to have water available.Overall, although the food was good, the whole experience was disappointing and left us a bit grossed out.
October 13 · Deb LNot much table service. This location is mostly a pick up/ take out place. Food is good, but very limited in the ordering process. You order by phone, app, or the kiosk. Good food but takes it's time (maybe a good thing). Good location, but limited in seating.
February 09 · A. KasperA no-frills spot with five tables, offering about 13-14 seats total, and a restroom for customers. There’s a digital kiosk near the entrance for self-ordering, whether for dine-in or takeout. Service is quick, and food is served on disposable plates. I’ve never seen a host at the payment counter, but you can get assistance by waving at someone in the kitchen. I’m a big fan of their Signature Rice Rolls, which I highly recommend. I also like their pancakes and crepes.
