Visiting New York for the first time in years. I had the mushroom sandwich and a cappuccino, and both were incredible. The sandwich was massive, crispy, and packed with flavor. Easily one of the best plant-based sandwiches I’ve had. It came with plantain chips, a kale salad, and spicy pickled veggies that added a perfect kick. The space is small but definitely has a community feel. While I was eating at the window bar, a woman sat down next to me and said, “I know you’re enjoying that sandwich” because she had it the week before. That kind of energy says a lot. I’ll absolutely come back. - Grilo Preto

Lakou Cafe Introduce

Tucked away in the historic Weeksville area of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Lakou Cafe is a true neighborhood gem that masterfully blends the rich, flavorful traditions of Haitian cuisine with the inviting, modern atmosphere of a classic cafe. The name "Lakou" itself, meaning "courtyard" or "backyard" in Haitian Creole, reflects the cafe's mission to be a welcoming community hub—a place where residents can gather, connect, and nourish both their bodies and souls. This isn't just a coffee shop; it's a cultural space that stands out for its vibrant energy, decorated with local art and filled with the lively sounds of Kompa, neo-soul, and Afrobeats music.

Lakou Cafe's identity is deeply rooted in its ownership and mission. It proudly identifies as a Black-owned, Latino-owned, and women-owned business, serving as a beacon of community activism and a platform for local artists. The menu at Lakou Cafe is a testament to its fusion concept. While it serves up excellent coffee and a great selection of teas, it truly shines with its full-fledged food and drink offerings. The menu is a journey through Haitian-American flavors, featuring everything from hearty breakfast plates to savory sandwiches and authentic Haitian main courses. A significant portion of the menu is vegan-friendly, with creative and well-seasoned dishes that cater to a wide range of dietary preferences. This focus on healthy, organic options, including a number of vegetarian and vegan plates, ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Customers rave about the food, noting the incredible flavors and generous portions. The Fried Mushroom Sandwich, for example, has been hailed as one of the best plant-based sandwiches in New York City, celebrated for its crispy texture and flavorful kick from the accompanying pikliz (spicy pickled veggies). The Haitian Fried Chicken and Kreyol Shrimp plates are also fan favorites, praised for their authentic and delicious taste. Beyond the food, the drinks are equally praised, from the classic coffee selections made with Haitian coffee beans to unique cocktails and fresh juices like the popular Ginger Limeade. Lakou Cafe’s multifaceted appeal—combining delicious food, a diverse drink menu, a welcoming atmosphere, and a strong community focus—makes it a standout destination in Brooklyn.
