Features / Highlights
The Maqluba Restaurant stands out in the competitive NYC dining scene due to several unique features and a highly-praised customer experience.
- Signature Dish - Maqloube: The restaurant’s namesake dish, Maqloube (meaning "upside-down"), is a true standout. This specialty is a richly layered pot of seasoned rice, fried vegetables (such as carrot, potato, cauliflower, and eggplant), and meat (chicken, lamb, or shrimp) or a vegan option, which is inverted onto a platter for serving. The elaborate preparation and presentation are central to the restaurant's identity.
- M'sakhan: Another distinctive and highly-rated specialty is the M'sakhan, which consists of a half chicken served over fresh Taboon bread with sautéed onions, sumac, pine nuts, and almonds, representing a traditional Palestinian feast dish.
- Commitment to Freshness and Quality: Patrons consistently highlight the exceptional freshness of the ingredients. Even cold appetizers like Babaghanoush, Hummus, and Labneh are noted for tasting freshly made, with ingredients that "shined" through, unlike "prepared a long time ago" items found elsewhere. The meats, such as chicken shawarma and kebabs, are described as tender, generously portioned, and bursting with flavor.
- Unique Menu Items: The restaurant serves dishes that are hard to find in many other NYC Middle Eastern eateries, such as Stuffed Kosa (Persian squash) and Fatta dishes (layers of crispy pita, chickpeas, yogurt, and other toppings).
- Exceptional Customer Service: The staff is frequently praised for being "attentive, welcoming, and genuinely passionate." They are noted for accommodating requests, making guests feel valued, and being eager to share insights into the menu, including family recipes and country influences.
- Authentic Flavor Blends: The restaurant prides itself on blending Lebanese recipes with spices imported directly from Palestine, creating a unique and authentically Levantine flavor profile.
