Features / Highlights
Mayas Snack Bar distinguishes itself from standard ice cream joints by focusing on a vibrant cultural experience and unique menu highlights that draw a loyal following throughout the Bronx:
Cultural and Menu Highlights:
- The 'Locos' Snack Lineup: This is a defining feature of the menu. Items like **CHEETOS Locos** and **Tosti Esquites** ($10.35) are Mexican street food classics, often involving a complex layering of chips, sauces, lime juice, chili powder, and pickled ingredients. These prepared snacks offer an explosion of flavor—sweet, sour, salty, and spicy—that is an essential part of the Mexican snack experience and a rarity in typical New York ice cream shops. The massive, beautiful **Sandia Loca** is a showstopper.
- Authentic Paletas and Natural Flavors: Customers consistently rave that the flavor of the ice cream is **natural**. This points to the use of fresh ingredients in their ice creams and paletas (popsicles), distinguishing them from artificially flavored alternatives. The **Paleta De Leche** (milk-based) and **Paleta De Agua** (water-based) are prepared with traditional methods, providing a true taste of a Mexican *nevería*.
- The Community and Atmosphere: The atmosphere is a major draw. The space is proudly **Family-friendly** and **LGBTQ+ friendly**, creating a welcoming environment for a diverse crowd. The presence of **rich cultural music** enhances the casual dining experience, making it a true communal hub, as noted by local patrons. This commitment to community is what makes it a local institution in the Belmont area.
- Specialty Beverages and Desserts: The bar’s specialty drinks, such as the famous **Chamoyada** ($13.80)—a sweet, spicy, and sour slushie made with fruit, chamoy sauce, and chili powder—and the fresh **Aguas Frescas** are signature items that showcase authentic Mexican beverage culture. Another highlight is the **Pan Dulce Con Helado Reg.** ($9.77), which pairs sweet bread with ice cream, a delicious twist on a dessert classic.
- Addressing Customer Service: It is worth noting the customer feedback regarding service efficiency. While the shop is lauded for its fresh food and flavor—with one customer noting, “Everything tastes so fresh”—it is also acknowledged that staff **take their sweet time making them**. This suggests that new customers should anticipate a potential wait, especially since the elaborate specialty items, like the Chamoyadas and 'Locos' snacks, are made fresh to order. For a busy New York local, planning for a moment of patience ensures maximum enjoyment of the delicious, made-from-scratch food.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Love to get Chamoyada from them. Everything tastes so fresh. Definitely expensive but im more annoyed about the service than the price. The girls behind the counter always have attitude, they aren’t friendly or helpful. As I was waiting for my order (they take their sweet time making them, so definitely don’t go in a rush) I noticed how they completely disregarded someone trying to place an order. Even when he tried kindly and directly asking for help, he was completely disregarded not even a give me a minute.
September 19 · Katherine AlegreThe place is completely family-friendly, with rich cultural music, and the flavor of the ice cream is natural. I am glad to see the Spanish community come together to commune and eat this delicious food. I thank this store for representing my Belmont Community. The ice cream is so delicious that my stomach agrees so much. Thank you!
February 20 · Klein Visualsclean place, great customer service AND good music. The menu is great and tasty.
July 24 · Melani TGreat Mexican ice cream and paletas (ice pops) alongside tons of snacks items like pancakes, locas and drink options. They have a large collection of ice cream flavors (20 with 4 vegan) with Mexican/central American inspirations such as gansito, tres leches, maracuya etc. and 10+ paleta flavors. The prices are decent, large portions, great ambience and they allow sampling. Definitely recommend. The ice cream itself has great texture and is quite flavourful. My favourite's were the gansito, tres leches and maracuya. It is easy to access because it is right in front of the metro North Fordham station.
January 04 · Alan VargheseThe Sevice was good. But very disappointing that my food didn’t come with no chicken? I pay 10 dollars for a skin, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream.milkshake was good but a little milk down had to put it in the freezer for a few over all 4 stars
