Melba's Restaurant Introduce
In the vibrant heart of Harlem, Melba's Restaurant stands as a testament to genuine Southern hospitality and a culinary destination for locals and visitors alike. This isn’t just a place to eat; it's a lively and welcoming hub where the food is as comforting as the atmosphere is vibrant. Owned by Harlem native Melba Wilson, this establishment has become a neighborhood landmark, celebrated for bringing authentic soul food to the forefront of New York City's dining scene. Known for its delicious food, famously large portions, and a lively, fun ambiance, Melba's is the go-to spot for anyone craving a taste of the South. The restaurant's reputation for quality and its consistent ability to fill its seats, particularly on weekends, speaks volumes about its place in the community.
The food at Melba's is a true celebration of Southern comfort cuisine. The menu is packed with classic dishes that are prepared with a homemade touch and served in generous, "HUGE" portions, as one customer enthusiastically described. Each entree typically comes with two sides, ensuring that no one leaves hungry. The smothered chicken, country catfish, and the iconic chicken and waffles are among the most popular choices, each promising a rich and flavorful experience. The sides are just as important, with the mac and cheese, collard greens, and the "A$AP" sugared yams receiving high praise. While some diners have noted that certain dishes can be a bit salty, the consensus is that the food is undeniably good, reminiscent of classic comfort food found in places like Atlanta. The "A$AP sugared yams" are a particular highlight, described as "so sweet and very moist," and a definite favorite for many.
What truly sets Melba's apart is its vibrant and energetic atmosphere. It’s a place that feels alive, where the buzz of conversation and laughter creates a warm and inviting environment. While it can get "a little loud at times," it's not so loud that it disrupts conversation, making it a great spot for a social outing with friends or family. The service, while sometimes noted as slow on busy nights with missed items, is generally described as "great," with a friendly and accommodating staff. The fact that the restaurant is often packed, especially on weekends, highlights its popularity and the fact that people are willing to wait for a table. To ensure you get a seat, especially during peak hours, reservations are highly recommended. Melba's is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience that combines great food, a fun atmosphere, and a taste of Harlem's unique culture.

Melba's Restaurant Reviews
Recommend reservations on weekend. I came at 8 and has to wait about 30 minutes. Good food large portions i could not eat it all. The service was a little slow and inattentive our server missed items that were ordered and requested. Will definitely visit again.
September 07 · Lori GibsonFirst off, the food portions are HUGE. Each entree comes with two sides. I got the country catfish (I'd rate it 7.5/10) and my sides were mac and cheese and collard greens. The country catfish was pretty good but a bit salty. The sides were also delicious but the collard greens were pretty salty. The smothered chicken (dark meat, I'd rate it 6.5/10) was also good. The meat wasn't dry and there was a lot of gravy. The garlic mashed potatoes were very flavorful but quite salty. I lived in Atlanta for a few years and most of the comfort food down there was pretty salty too. We got the a$ap sugared yams which was probably my favorite. They were so sweet and very moist. This is such a fun and lively place to eat at. It does get a little loud at times but not so loud that I couldn't converse. The service was also great even though it was pretty packed inside.
August 12 · JaeHee KwakFor our trip to see Gypsy, I started thinking about what else we could do while in the city. Attractions, food spots, something memorable. Only there for 24 hours, our options were limited. Then I remembered Melba’s. When I mentioned it to my mom, she was immediately on board - especially once she recalled that Sherri Shepherd has raved about Melba’s more than once on her talk show. Just like that, one stop was locked in for this whirlwind trip.Thank goodness I made a reservation for Saturday lunch. Traffic wasn’t too bad, and parking wasn’t difficult either. Even better, we didn’t have to walk far, which made both me and my mom extra happy. From the outside, Melba’s looks like a regular smegular spot. But the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with community and culture - it’s a vibe. The staff were warm and welcoming, and even the other diners felt like family. For our meal, I ordered the Chilean sea bass with mac and A$AP yams. So good. Honestly, I was eating with my eyes before it even touched my lips because the plating was beautiful. My mom went with the fried catfish, collards, and A$AP yams. She loves catfish, and this plate didn’t disappoint - she was more than satisfied with both the portion size and the flavor. The food was generous, and we couldn’t finish it all, so takeaway trays were a must. No complaints though - it definitely didn’t go to waste.

September 18 · Deanna ClaycombI was genuinely looking forward to trying this spot, but unfortunately, my experience fell short. Service was quite slow—we waited nearly 25 minutes before a server even approached our table. We ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese, the fried chicken, burger sliders, and collard greens. The food came out surprisingly fast, which made me question the freshness of some items. The sliders were dry and lacked seasoning, and the fried chicken had an unpleasant aftertaste, possibly from being cooked in old oil. That said, the short ribs and sides were decent. While I might’ve overlooked the service and food quality, I felt compelled to leave a review because I became very sick later that evening. 🤢😵💫 Something clearly did not sit well with my stomach, which was alarming.Sadly, this was my first and last visit. I hope the restaurant takes this as constructive feedback to reassess some of their food handling and service standards.
