Mendelsohn's Pizza Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers in the know, especially those in Brooklyn's Borough Park neighborhood, Mendelsohn's Pizza is more than just a pizza place—it's a local institution. Since its founding in 1969 by Rabbi Meir and Malka Mendelsohn, this family-owned eatery has built a reputation for its commitment to community, quality, and timeless recipes. While the name highlights its famous pizza, Mendelsohn’s offers a sprawling menu that caters to virtually every taste and dining occasion, establishing it as a go-to spot for a quick bite or a full, casual meal.
This establishment has deep roots in the New York Kosher dining scene, providing a wide array of dairy-based comfort food, salads, and more, all under Orthodox Union (OU) supervision. It has evolved significantly from a simple takeout shop to a spacious, inviting modern dining spot, but the core—the secret-recipe pizza dough, classic ziti sauce, and signature pita—remains a carefully guarded trade secret. Mendelsohn's success is a testament to its blend of keeping tradition alive while expanding its culinary offerings to meet the diverse needs of the New York community. From college students to groups and tourists, the atmosphere is consistently welcoming, casual, and cozy.
It is important to note that the ownership has recently expanded its presence on 18th Avenue with a separate, adjacent upscale establishment called Cucina Modern Kitchen, which focuses on a more refined Mediterranean-Italian table service experience. This new venture, while separate, builds on the Mendelsohn's decades-long reputation for quality in the neighborhood, ensuring that whether you want a quick slice or a sit-down dinner, the family’s culinary heritage is at your service right here in Brooklyn.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Mendelsohn's Pizza is a decision to embrace decades of culinary tradition fused with modern, expansive offerings. It stands out in the New York food scene for its unique position as a full-service, Kosher dairy restaurant that goes far beyond the typical pizzeria model. It is particularly worth choosing for several reasons.
First, the sheer variety and quality of the menu are exceptional for a pizza shop. While the classic New York pizza, with its secret-recipe dough and sauce, is a must-try, the extensive range of other dishes is where Mendelsohn's truly shines. Customer reviews often praise the freshness of the fish, the perfectly prepared salads from the salad bar, and the great falafel, indicating a dedication to quality across the board. The inclusion of dishes like baked ziti, eggplant parmesan, and even a full sushi menu offers a unique dining flexibility.
Second, the friendly, consistent service and clean environment are frequently highlighted by long-time patrons. The professional yet friendly staff behind the counter create a welcoming environment that makes it an ideal spot for taking lunch guests or enjoying a solo meal. The constant efforts to keep the place clean contribute significantly to a comfortable dining experience.
Finally, the restaurant's commitment to accessibility and community focus makes it a highly inclusive choice. Whether you need a wheelchair accessible location, are dining with children and need high chairs, or are simply looking for a quick, wholesome meal that adheres to strict Kosher standards, Mendelsohn's Pizza is built to accommodate. The historical significance, paired with the continually evolving menu and modern ambiance (including its connection to the adjacent, upscale Cucina Modern Kitchen), cements Mendelsohn's as a foundational, reliable, and celebrated dining destination for New Yorkers in the Brooklyn area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a classic a great pizza shop with some nice options for other dishes. The fish is fresh the falafel is great and the salads are well prepared. Service is fantastic. Great guys behind the counter and they are constantly trying to keep the place clean. I’ve taken many lunch guests there. I like the new place next door, I think the same ownership looking to cater to more of a table service type crowd.
July 22 · Yehiel M KalishOrdered through Uber Eats. They now use a delivery service called Sauce. App shows the person all over the map. I get my order, instead of a pie I get 3 slices in a smaller box. I asked the delivery guy and he just says it's the receipt that's correct. Called the restaurant and left a voicemail. They never returned my call. Never ordering from here again.
September 07 · Knight RacerHow could you sell your customers this ? Cheese half gone… Frieds thrown on pizza. Dough burnt and super thin!!! You should be ashamed of yourself. Wouldn’t ever pay 5 cents for it .
October 01 · D RI do not know how people like the pizza here. Maybe as a kosher option. But as far as pizza goes this is not it. Randazzo's is a better close option, Lo Duca at Newkirk Plaza even better but a bit of a walk. Service here wasn't great either, and I got a lot of dirty looks when I walked in. Cashier was abrupt and short with me (it was my first time there) and rolled his eyes when I asked if they had parmesan. I get it to an extent because I've worked in food service in New York and new customers can be annoying, but it wasn't busy and I was pretty good at figuring out how to get my food and pay but they were still unfriendly with me. It felt race-driven but what are you gonna do.
July 06 · Shai HThis is a wonderful Kosher pizza place. Of course, I'm literally putting my name on the line with this review, but truly, it was delicious. I enjoyed the wholesome atmosphere, and there were lots of good selections of food to choose from. I recommend Mendelsohn's Pizza, and I intend to make a return visit.
