4.0
Pretty good Ethiopian food, better service! Our server recommended some great Ethiopian barley beer because they were out of honey wine, and also helped us package our leftovers to go (because rolling up injera bread is not too easy). We ordered the Meskerem and the Vegetarian combo platter as well as a chicken dish, but were somewhat disappointed with the portion size. Next time we might try to order specifics to get larger portions. - India Ratha

Meskerem Introduce

For New Yorkers seeking a dining experience that is both unique and deeply flavorful, Meskerem stands as an unmissable destination. Located in the vibrant, bohemian heart of Greenwich Village, this restaurant offers an authentic taste of Ethiopia right in the middle of Manhattan. Meskerem is more than just a place to eat; it's a culinary and cultural journey that introduces diners to the rich, aromatic spices and communal style of Ethiopian cuisine. As a proud Black-owned business, it holds a special place in the city's diverse food scene, contributing to the rich tapestry of flavors that define New York. The restaurant's name itself, which means "new beginning" or "spring," sets a tone of freshness and renewal, which is reflected in its approach to food and hospitality.

The atmosphere at Meskerem is a perfect blend of casual and cozy. The interior is designed to be a comfortable space where friends, families, and solo diners can gather and enjoy a meal at their own pace. The communal dining style, where dishes are served on a large platter of injera (a spongy, sourdough flatbread) for sharing, creates a sense of togetherness that is truly unique. This makes it an ideal spot for groups, whether you are with family or friends. The restaurant also caters to a diverse crowd, including college students from the nearby universities, who are drawn to the combination of a relaxed setting, excellent food, and reasonable prices.

Beyond the food, Meskerem is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment. The staff is known for being friendly and helpful, offering recommendations and assistance to those who may be new to Ethiopian cuisine. One customer review praised the server who "recommended some great Ethiopian barley beer" and helped with packaging leftovers, highlighting the attentive service. This level of hospitality, combined with the restaurant's commitment to authentic flavors, makes Meskerem a culinary treat that many New Yorkers look forward to revisiting.

Meskerem is situated at 124 MacDougal St, New York, NY 10012, placing it in one of Greenwich Village’s most iconic and lively corridors. MacDougal Street is known for its historic cafes, vibrant nightlife, and a diverse range of restaurants, making it a perfect location for an establishment that offers a unique dining experience. The street is always bustling with energy, and Meskerem provides a cozy retreat from the action.

The restaurant’s location is highly accessible via public transportation, with the A, C, E, B, D, F, M subway lines at West 4th Street station just a short walk away. What is worth choosing

Meskerem’s menu is filled with authentic Ethiopian dishes, but a few items stand out and are well worth trying. The Meskerem Combo is an excellent choice for first-time visitors or those looking to sample a variety of dishes. It offers a selection of both vegetarian and meat dishes, all served on a large platter of injera, perfect for sharing. Another great option for a full experience is the Vegetarian Combo, which allows you to taste a mix of dishes like Miser Wat (lentils) and Shiro Wat (chickpeas).

For appetizers, the Sambosa is a must-try. As a customer review noted, these are savory pastries filled with a mixture of beef, peppers, and onions, with a "slight bit of a spicy kick." The Azefa, a green lentil salad, is also a refreshing starter.

On the main course menu, the Lega Tibs and Special Tibs are very popular, consisting of tender pieces of meat sautéed with various spices and vegetables. A customer highlighted the Gomen Besiga (beef with collard greens) as being an excellent dish that pairs well with injera.

Beyond the specific dishes, the experience of eating at Meskerem is what is truly worthwhile. The shared platter style encourages conversation and a sense of community, making it more than just a meal. The restaurant also offers Ethiopian beer and coffee, which are worth trying to complete the authentic dining experience. While one review mentioned concerns about portion sizes on the combo platters, this may encourage patrons to order specific main courses to get a larger portion, as suggested. Ultimately, Meskerem is a place to step outside the typical dining routine and enjoy a flavorful, communal, and unique meal in one of New York’s most iconic neighborhoods.
