★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dominique Ansel's new playground.Taiwanese and Japanese inspired pastries, with a French twist. This is not something new, as bakeries in Asian countries have played with this concept for years.Hot Dog Spiral was a must-have, for me personally. Taiwanese hot dog bun was a bakery staple, and definitely nostalgic. I definitely was hit with nostalgia with this pastry. The sticky rice filling inside was also quite a nice touch, but definitely a heavy hit.Curry bun was also good. Super soft bun and delicious curry inside. The crispy puffed rice on the outside was a nice texture contrast.Taro mochi donut was good, but definitely was not what I expected. I was hoping for a taro filling, but got guava (I believe). It was also deep fried, so definitely recommend to have it warm at the cafe.Overall, Chef Ansel once again outdone himself in my opinion. Definitely want to come back again.
August 31 · Joshua YoungDominque Ansel’s long-awaited new bakery offers Asian-style pastries. We visited on opening day, and the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation. The egg and tomato bao was a delightful treat, bursting with that intense savory umami flavor that you typically find in this combination. The hotdog sticky rice croissant was also impressive. The hotdog is glazed in a sweet sauce that complements the savory mushroom sticky rice underneath. Unfortunately, it arrived cold, mostly due to the sheer number of orders that were coming through on opening morning. The taro lace mochi donut reminded us of the taro lace dishes you’d find on a dim sum menu. The sweet jam filling was a delightful surprise! The iced chocolate soufflé was poured table-side and is currently only available for dine-in customers. It had a Milo dinosaur-like taste and was perfectly sweet.Overall, this is a great addition to New York City’s bakery scene. Despite some minor hiccups on opening day, we would happily return to try more of their offerings!
May 22 · Liam Henry-TanAs of late, this is for sure one of my favorite bakeries in the city. They execute both savoury and sweet pastries very well, and the service is attentive. Some personal favorites were the kurobuta hot dog spiral (the sticky rice really nailed it for me), the scallion basil blossom, and the mango coconut jam jar.
August 16 · Khoi PhamVisited on a Sunday around 11AM. The store was pretty full but there was no line and I was able to grab an outside table. The cashier was very friendly and pleasant. As a mochi fan, my personal favorite was the ube mochi donut. Don’t expect a traditional donut or a regular mochi donut. This was mostly just fried mochi with some jam in the middle. Ube flavor wasn’t very strong. It just tasted like regular jam to me. The crust is very crispy and fun.Sticky rice sausage bun tastes exactly like how it sounds. Egg tarts are interesting and more salty than the usual ones I’ve gotten at Asian bakeries. The mango coconut jam jar is made of chocolate and completely edible! I love the environmental friendliness of this item.
September 04 · T YThe mochi donut is proper. It’s unique and delicious. The mochi itself is high quality. The crispy edges. Strawberry jam. Ya. It hits.Now. The butter tipped soft serve. What in the heck is going on, Dominque? The ice cream is icey. The butter is like… kinda good. But not great. Just did not hit. C tier dessert imo.Everything else looks great. We got a croissant sample and it was amazing. My only other complaint is that it’s kind of messy inside. The vibes are almost like the inside of a busy Starbucks.
