Strange Delight Introduce
Strange Delight is a culinary gem nestled in the heart of Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood, offering a fresh and elevated take on New Orleans-inspired seafood. It’s a place that manages to channel the spirit of the Crescent City without relying on clichés, instead focusing on a laid-back, convivial atmosphere and a menu that is a heartfelt "love letter" to the seafood dishes of Louisiana. The restaurant, with its contemporary design and welcoming facade, stands out as a destination for those seeking a unique and memorable dining experience. It's a spot that has quickly become one of the most exciting seafood places to open in New York in recent years, drawing in locals and visitors alike with its distinct flavors and thoughtful approach to classic dishes.
The menu at Strange Delight is a well-curated celebration of the sea, with a special emphasis on oysters. You'll find these bivalves prepared in a variety of styles, from raw with a classic mignonette to "charbroiled" in a former pizza oven, which caramelizes the outside while leaving the interior juicy and sweet. This specific preparation is a loving nod to New Orleans institutions, as are the Oysters Rockefeller, which take inspiration from the classic version at Galatoire's. But the menu's brilliance doesn't stop at oysters. Strange Delight has perfected the seafood tower, offering a version for one person as well as a shareable platter. These towers and platters can feature everything from local cold oysters and shrimp cocktail to smoked fish dip and shrimp and crab remoulade, providing a comprehensive taste of the menu's best offerings.
Beyond the shellfish, the restaurant is also lauded for its hefty and delicious sandwiches, often referred to as "loaves," which are served on soft milk bread. The fried shrimp loaf, in particular, has garnered a reputation as an impressive piece of culinary architecture, with perfectly fried shrimp and layers of crisp vegetables. Other menu standouts include the light and wonderfully sweet hush puppies with Steen’s butter, as well as the richly savory blackened swordfish belly. The kitchen's commitment to using fresh, high-quality ingredients shines through in every dish, and the laid-back, friendly service adds to the overall warmth of the experience. It's a place where you can feel the energy of the bustling kitchen and the friendly buzz of the bar, making it a truly engaging spot to dine.
The atmosphere at Strange Delight is designed to be approachable and fun. While the dining room has a tranquil, sunlit vibe, the front bar area is more lively, offering a chance to watch the chefs at work. The space is cozy and trendy, making it a great choice for a date night, a celebratory meal, or a casual lunch. The restaurant is also noted for being an inclusive and welcoming space, being family-friendly, LGBTQ+ friendly, and a transgender safe space, which contributes to its reputation as a community-oriented establishment. The location's proximity to major venues like the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Barclays Center also makes it an excellent choice for a pre-show or post-game meal, though reservations are highly recommended, especially on days with big events. The combination of its flavorful menu, lively yet comfortable atmosphere, and excellent service makes Strange Delight a must-visit in Fort Greene.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I invited a friend to Strange Delight delight under the guise of indulging in the seafood tower happy hour, while very well knowing we couldn’t leave without sampling more of the menu. The tower is perfect - you can essentially build your own tower. We had oysters which were smaller but packed with flavor, pimento dip that was punchy and savoury, and side salad which was well dressed, balanced, and layered with herbs. Then to our gateway: the charbroiled oysters - classic will always have my heart, but the spicy BBQ were something special- I’ve never had anything like it! Would be a great introduction to oysters for anyone nervous to try. And of course to soak up all that delicious sauce we had the house bread with seaweed butter - I don’t think I’ve had a more delicious bread&butter combo. Hush puppies were small and light and came with a delicious honey butter. Then to the BBQ shrimp and shrimp loaf. BBQ shrimp were large, plump, and delicious - a delicate balance of savoury with a hint of sweetness and bathing in sauce. If you think you don’t need some form of bread to help you finish off that sauce, you my friend are mistaken. And finally the shrimp loaf- giant, perfectly fried shrimp, delicately bound between cool and crisp veggie held together by the softest sandwich bread! It’s worth whatever hype you may have heard about it. Beyond the food, the staff and service were spectacular- front of house and kitchen staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive! Our server Jordan was excellent! The attention the detail was spectacular- glasses never neared empty, dishes were collected as they were emptied, and our counter was always wiped clean- Strange Delight is a gem of an experience, one you’ll want to revisit.
September 01 · Samantha DiazA lovely and modest spot bringing upscale seafood inspired heavily by New Orleans. You can really see and taste the inspiration throughout the menu! Everything we had was amazing and I absolutely will be going again! We went for lunch, but I've heard that dinner is even better.
August 29 · David Elkan-GonzalezJust alright. Nothing was memorable from this meal EXCEPT the bread pudding which was absolutely delicious. The fried oysters (4/5), fries (3/5), grilled shrimp (3.5/5), the swordfish (3.5/5), and the charred oysters (4/5) we're all good, but not worth the price at all. The bread pudding (5/5) was great - they should just sell that. Staff was nice!
May 07 · Christi BalakiThis place is fun and cute, and the staff were all great. The food was mostly tasty and creative, but around half the dishes were very salty. I love salt and it was still too much, the étouffée and fried oysters with fries in particular. Seafood tower also feels a little reliant on dips for the price, they could add another shrimp and oyster IMHO. But it was delicious, as was the Som Tam salad. They were probably just a bit heavy on the seasoning tonight, overall definitely worth a visit and I’d go back.
August 15 · Nathan LincolnI came here for a group dinner with a prefix menu and it's one of the best dining experiences I've had in NYC. The seafood is fresh, impeccably prepared and seasoned to perfection. We had the seafood tower, hush puppies, charbroiled oysters, catfish nuggets, swordfish belly, Chinese broccoli salad, and sazerac milk bread pudding. Everything was delicious, but the shrimp remoulade and seasoned crackers from the seafood tower, catfish nuggets (and those fries!!), and swordfish belly were particular standouts. I'm already dreaming about the next time I can come for dinner and have recommended this spot to all my friends.
