We had a reservation on Valentine’s Day and as expected it was fully packed. When we got there we were thankfully seated promptly as a few tables were open, but the tables were so close to each other. It was impossible to not hear other tables’ conversations.Since they were packed the service was pretty slow. Even with five diff people moving around, it took nearly 20 mins to take our order and we didn’t get our main dish until after an hour of being there. Apps were served right away so that was a plus! Surprisingly, even the drinks took some time. They had a Valentine’s Day special menu, which basically was just their normal pasta menu. For apps, we got the burrata and prosciutto which was so delicious. Good portion size. This was probably the best part of dinner. For mains, we got a gnocchi w/ mussels pasta and another pasta (forget the name). The gnocchi was chewy and delicious but the sauce was a bit watery and bland. The dish wasn’t bad as they were generous with the mussels but overall it was a pretty standard pasta. The other pasta dish was inconsistently cooked- some parts undercooked some parts overcooked. We got two glasses of red wine and no desserts, given we had been there for almost 1.5 hours after mains and needed to go to our next destination.Overall, with the OK food, slow service, but still relatively high check we probably wouldn’t go back again unless a friend really wanted to go. - Iun Chen

Introduction / Overview: VIA VAI – A Taste of Authentic Italy in the Heart of Astoria

For New Yorkers seeking a genuine Italian culinary experience without leaving the five boroughs, VIA VAI stands out as a premier destination in the vibrant Astoria neighborhood of Queens. More than just a local Italian restaurant, VIA VAI offers an authentic and contemporary Italian cuisine, deeply rooted in the traditions of Italy, particularly Rome, the native city of its Chef/Owner, Antonio Morichini. Since opening in 2014, VIA VAI has become a cherished spot for those who appreciate high-quality, artisanal food, a warm, inviting atmosphere, and a menu that shuns common Italian-American fare in favor of time-honored dishes. The restaurant's name, 'Via Vai,' is an Italian expression for conviviality and movement—people coming and going, gathering together—perfectly encapsulating the spirit of this community-focused establishment.

The dedication to authenticity is evident in their culinary approach: many pastas are made by hand daily, and their Roman-style thin-crust pizzas are baked to perfection in an imported Italian-made brick oven. Chef Morichini, whose impressive career includes work in Michelin-starred kitchens in Italy and renowned restaurants in New York, brings a sophisticated yet accessible touch to every plate. From the imported buffalo mozzarella to the carefully curated Italian wine list, the focus remains firmly on fresh, high-quality ingredients and traditional Italian methods, often updated with a modern sensibility. This commitment to craft and quality has not gone unnoticed, earning praise from local critics and dedicated patrons alike.
