More than just a restaurant, White Maize has established itself as a true culinary sanctuary for the health-conscious and those with dietary restrictions. Given that the traditional arepa is naturally gluten-free, the menu is largely celiac-friendly by design. It brilliantly blends the rich, comforting flavors of Latin American food with modern needs, making it a favorite for lunch, dinner, and solo dining in the Carroll Gardens area of New York City.
The atmosphere is often described as cozy and trendy, enhanced by traditional music that creates a home-like feeling. It’s an ideal spot for groups, families, and is known for being an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safe space, ensuring a welcoming environment for all New Yorkers looking for a flavorful and authentic dining experience.
The core of the menu revolves around Arepas, Bowls, and Burritos, all customizable with an array of fillings. From the signature shredded chicken and beef to fantastic vegetable-forward options, White Maize successfully caters to a wide palate. This Brooklyn spot is not just about meeting dietary needs; it's about celebrating the heart of Venezuelan food culture. The emphasis on corn-based dishes like arepas and cachapas provides a unique and memorable alternative to many of the city's other Latin American offerings, making it a unique culinary anchor on Smith Street.
The casual dining style, combined with high-quality, authentic flavors, positions White Maize as an accessible everyday dining option, perfect for New Yorkers seeking something beyond the typical fast-casual fare. It’s a place where tradition, taste, and dietary sensitivity come together beautifully.
The menu showcases an appreciation for traditional preparation, such as their popular Tequeños (fresh cheese wrapped in dough, deep-fried) and the rich, sweet Corn Pancakes known as Cachapas. Even the simple sides, like Sweet Plantains and Tostones, are prepared with care, reflecting the deep culinary heritage of Venezuela.
In a city where dining options are endless, White Maize manages to carve out a distinct and vital niche. It provides an essential service for the celiac and plant-based communities while simultaneously introducing everyone to the satisfying comfort of Venezuelan comfort food.

What is worth choosing
For any New Yorker seeking authentic Venezuelan food, White Maize is an essential stop. The centerpiece of the menu is undoubtedly the arepa, a versatile and satisfying naturally gluten-free cornmeal pocket. The Pabellón Arepa or the Pabellón Vegetariano Arepa ($12.64), featuring black beans, sweet plantains, and fresh white cheese (or avocado and cheese for the vegetarian version), represents the national dish of Venezuela and is a highly recommended comfort food choice. For a hearty, balanced meal, the Bowls, such as the Veggie Bowl ($15.17) or the Grilled Portabella Mushroom Bowl ($15.17), are an excellent way to enjoy the classic Venezuelan flavors over rice and black beans. The Veggie Burrito ($10.60) is another budget-friendly and delicious plant-based option. Additionally, appetizers like the Guac Tostones ($9.11) or the Fried Yuca Balls ($6.07) are fantastic for sharing and tasting various aspects of the cuisine. The commitment to a naturally gluten-free and vegan-friendly menu ensures that this restaurant is a valuable and dependable choice for virtually all diners in the Brooklyn area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Totally disregards notes. WAY overpriced. I used to order from here all the time but stopped because the accuracy of delivery was so bad. I spent $80 on food and it was missing all the sauces and drinks. When you call the restaurant they don't pick up and hang up after one ring. Not sure what it's like in person but for delivery, it's a hard NO. Not worth the $$ for dry arepas especially when they forget the sauces and sodas.Follow up. The owner Kathyana texted me, thanked me for my feedback and personally apologized and said she'd like to win my trust and business back by delivering my order again at my convenience. She said there was someone new running the orders that night and mistakes were made. However, when I texted her back to set up the delivery, I never heard back. If you read the reviews I am not the only person to have the issue of them not following notes, mistakes on delivery, not being able to contact the restaurant via phone etc. I appreciated the text but why send if you're not going to follow up. Feels very hollow and superficial. They've lost a former loyal customer permanently.
September 22 · Ashley PeterSecond time making it out here. They have the best Venezuelan arapas. I got the one with shredded chicken and fried plantains. The sauces are so good and the masa is light and fluffy with a crisp outside.
February 19 · Mark BradtI had the pulled pork arepas and it was so amazing. the portions look small but they’re very filling, almost couldn’t finish it. I told the staff about my gluten allergy (celiac) and they gave me details on what i could and couldn’t have. Very kind staff with awareness. Very nice spacious eating area.
August 01 · eva divaWhite Maize has been on my list for a long time, so once I had a reason to be in Carroll Gardens, I decided to finally check it out! I walked in around 3:30pm on a Thursday, and I was the sole customer. They have a small (~ 6 small parties) seating area and restrooms for those who want to dine in, and whoever was in control of the music was a Swiftie! I will say that both times I have been here the person working the register has not been the most alert, but apologetic once I got their attention.I got the pulled pork bowl ($15.16), which is an elevated Chipotle bowl. I went for the bowl over the arepas because 1 arepa was almost the same price, and I felt like the bowl would be more filling. If you prefer smaller meals, I think you can get the most bang for your buck with the bowl, since you can split it into 2 meals. I was starving, so I consumed it all in one sitting, and it was filling indeed! I felt like the ingredient selection and quality justified the price, and the plantains were definitely a highlight! The pulled pork was juicy and well flavored, rice was on the softer side, and the tomatoes in the salsa (under avocado in picture) were delicious. My only critique of this bowl is that the layout is pretty but not practical for mixing.Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way for White Maize but I will be a regular when I have business in the area!
May 30 · Ashlyn KogaI always wanna try arepas since I never had this dish until I started traveling. Although I can only speak as a foreigner not familiar with this dish, I think it was delicious.A chill, low-key place to enjoy food with friends. Staff was also friendly.I had the Pabellon arepas. Although the pulled beef was slightly dry, everything else was delicious. The corn pancake was slightly crispy outside.✨✨✨My VIP goes to their Tres Leches cake..!! It was rich, moist, and creamy. But I don’t recommend their flan, have to be honest. It was hard like jello. Not the expected texture.
