Yi Mei Bakery Introduce
For New Yorkers who appreciate extraordinary value coupled with genuine Chinese baking traditions, Yi Mei Bakery in the Elmhurst section of Queens is a must-visit destination. While the exterior of the location at 81-24 Broadway may be modest, often described as a "hidden gem," customers consistently find that stepping inside reveals a "completely clean, neat and well organized place" brimming with tempting Asian pastries.
Yi Mei Bakery has earned its reputation primarily on two key factors: incredible prices and authentic flavors. In a city where baked goods often carry a premium price tag, Yi Mei stands out by offering products like fresh bread for around $2.00, a value that is almost unheard of in the current market. This commitment to affordability is highly valued by the local community, especially students, and is a significant draw for savvy New Yorkers seeking budget-friendly yet satisfying treats.
The bakery specializes in classic Chinese and likely Taiwanese-style pastries, characterized by light, fluffy textures and a balance of sweet and savory flavors. From various buns and rolls to their signature sponge cake, the menu offers a comforting taste of traditional Asian baking. This is a place where every dollar stretches further, allowing you to stock up on morning treats or satisfy a quick craving, cementing Yi Mei Bakery’s status as a beloved institution in Elmhurst.

---When visiting Yi Mei Bakery, New Yorkers should focus on the items that represent the best value and the core of the bakery's traditional offerings.
The Signature Sponge Cake: This is a non-negotiable choice. The sponge cake, particularly the large size, is an exceptional value proposition. Customers love that it is fluffy and not too sweet, making it a perfect light dessert or snack. While some may note a slight "banana, egg yolk taste," its airy texture and minimal sweetness make it a classic Asian-style favorite.
The Daily Bread/Buns: Take advantage of the incredibly low prices and the late-hour discount. Stock up on their variety of buns and rolls. At a base price of around $2.00 per bread item, or two for $3.00 during discount hours, it is worth choosing several different types for breakfast or snacks throughout the week. Look for savory options, like the traditional buns, and sweeter items like the sponge cake rolls.
The Coffee and A Quick Bite: If you are commuting or starting your day, choosing a fresh Coffee paired with one of their savory or sweet buns is the perfect, quick, and economical breakfast combination. This is ideal for busy New Yorkers needing a satisfying start without the high cost of typical Manhattan cafes.
Yi Mei Bakery is worth choosing because it embodies authentic, no-frills, community-focused value. It’s an essential Queens stop for anyone who loves Asian pastries and respects the tradition of a simple, honest, and high-quality baked good.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is truly a hidden gem. The store is small and look really old/rusty. But when you got inside, its a completely clean, neat and well organized place. There are not much bread but everything look good and yummy. I saw a lot of student came inside also, so I trusted this place. The experience is more than I expected. Besides the fact that bread is really cheap- Around 2$ for a bread? You can’t find something like this anymore.Besides they have discount, 2 bread for 3$ for late hour. So it’s really a community actions. The only thing bad about this place is the location is not eye catching, i wish they be known more. Definitely will visit it again
March 12 · Tr ThuyI used to come here a lot as a little kid and have fond memories of this place. Came back here and it’s changed a little from what I remember. First, the prices are still amazing. I got a big sponge cake for $2.25. The sponge cake tasted good, but it wasn’t anything special. It was very fluffy and not too sweet. It was a little dry and had this strange banana, egg yolk taste to it. Considering I came very close to closing, they had a good variety of baked goods, mostly sponge cake rolls and buns. The service was a little curt, and I felt kind of nervous paying for my order. Even from a no frills place it’s nice to have a polite staff.
June 06 · Beatrice EvansMy mom and I have been to this store many years ago and had a wonderful experience. The both of us got sponge cake and buns. The food was wonderful, and the service was wonderful. The atmosphere was that some people were in there, and many other things.
