Choosing what to eat at Aunt Liu's Private Kitchen can be the hardest part—every dish offers a compelling reason to visit. The menu is a comprehensive showcase of Sichuan's culinary excellence, from warming soups to signature main courses, authentic appetizers, and traditional desserts. The decision often comes down to how much 'ma la' you can handle!
Must-Try Appetizers and Starters:
For an authentic introduction, start with the classics. The 夫妻肺片 (Sliced Beef & Ox Tongue In Chili Sauce) and 口水鸡 (Chicken In Spicy Sauce) are quintessential Sichuan headliners, providing a burst of numbing spice. For a lighter but still flavorful option, the 凉拌黄瓜 (Cucumber Salad) or the unique 川北凉粉 (Chuanbei Jelly) offer refreshing contrasts. The 葱油饼 (Scallion Pancake) and the delightful 南瓜饼 (Pumpkin Cake) are perfect small bites.
Signature Sichuan Entrees (正餐 and 刘阿姨特别菜):
The core of the experience lies in the main courses. The 水煮沸腾牛肉 (Boiled Spicy Beef) exemplifies the famous 'water-boiled' style, rich with chilies and oil. The beloved 四川回锅肉 (Sichuan Twice-Cooked Pork) is a classic for a reason. Don't overlook the specialized dishes like 酸汤肥牛 (Beef In Sour Soup), the aromatic 蒜香鳝鱼 (Garlic-Flavored Eel), or the highly praised poultry dishes like 辣子鸡 (Spicy Chicken) and 鲜椒跳水牛蛙 (Fresh Pepper Diving Bullfrog). For seafood lovers, options range from 香辣蟹 (Spicy Crab) and 沙茶大虾 (Satay Shrimp) to the impressive 香辣烤鱼 (Spicy Grilled Fish) and 松鼠鱼 (Squirrel Fish). Adventurous diners will appreciate the 阿姨冷吃兔 (Homestyle Cold Rabbit). These dishes truly capture the soul of Sichuan cooking.
Comforting Soups and Staples:
To balance the heat, or for a comforting start, try a traditional soup like the rich and savory 鱼头豆腐汤 (Fish Head Tofu Soup) or the house specialty, 阿姨蹄花汤 (Auntie's Pork Trotter Soup). For staple carbohydrates, you can choose from 扬州炒饭 (Yangzhou Fried Rice), 韭菜水饺 (Chive Dumplings), or the classic 米饭 (Steamed Rice) to accompany the intensely flavored mains.
Why Customers Keep Coming Back:
Beyond the menu, the restaurant's value is in its authenticity and the warm, engaging presence of Aunt Liu. As one customer noted, the food is not for the weak—it delivers on the promise of 'mala' numbingness. Reviewers praise the excellent service and the nostalgic flavors, particularly mentioning dishes like the twice-cooked pork and the excellent 麻婆豆腐 (Mapo Tofu), which has a "nice kick of spicy." The dishes pair wonderfully with a cold beverage, whether it's a Beer or a traditional 王老吉 (Wong Lo Kat Herbal Tea). The ability to reserve the entire space for a private event, complete with a menu personally arranged by the chef, speaks volumes about the dedication to customer experience. For an authentic, no-compromise Sichuan meal in New York, Aunt Liu's Private Kitchen is a standout choice that provides exceptional food and a truly local, welcoming feel.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Truly a gem, in the back of a bar/karaoke. Aunty Liu is friendly to all the guests and always in good spirits. The food is not for the weak, if you cant handle mala numbingness, then this place is not for you.
July 29 · Fulton HouMy family had reserved the restaurant for lunch for a private event. It was nice that we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Also, we got special attention from the owner/chef. The owner cooked the food and brought the dishes directly to our table from the kitchen. The chef arranged the entire lunch menu. We got to taste some of the popular and famous dishes. Many of the food were my personal favorite. Start with some fried chicken nuggets and braised pork bellies. Then there was the squid. I loved the way the squids cooked with the green bell peppers.Next was one of my personal favorites: twice-cooked pork. I loved it because I remember eating it growing up. The Mapo Tofu was excellent. It's got nice flavors with a little kick of spicy. I can't recall all the dishes because the food kept coming from the kitchen, and I barely had time to take pictures of them.It was a lovely meal. Everything tasted great. The service was excellent. And the dishes go great with a glass of icy cold beer. If you are in the area, you got to come in and give it a try.
December 24 · Howard HThe food tastes so like the food I ate in Chongqing. Only complaint is of the 4 we ordered, they all tasted pretty similar which only the protein being changed. The oil is super authentic flavour and consistency.
June 16 · Andrew StrachanAuthentic Sichuan Food. Lots spicy and green pepper青花椒。 Love them, just like the ones I had in Sichuan. Must make reservation to go, since it's a small private restaurant.
August 28 · Chelsea HThe food is authentic, gotta get reservations first, as this place gets super crazy during the weekend. And it's just better to get a reservation overall as the place is small. The place used to be a bar I think, at least the front looks it.The food is covered with fresh pepper corns even with it's stem. The beef dish in my opinion is the best, then the veggie I think the name is dowmeow? It's delicious. I didn't taste the frog but the first was pretty.Be warned, it's spicy for some. Don't use the soup from the dish and mix it with rice. It will upset some people's stomach as it has hot pepper in it.
