Betty Bakery Introduce
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Brooklyn, New York, Betty Bakery offers a unique and satisfying culinary experience that goes far beyond your average coffee shop. While it provides the essential morning brew, this beloved local spot truly shines as a destination for exceptional, freshly baked goods, particularly its famous Australian-style savory pies. Identifying as a Latino-owned business, Betty Bakery is a welcoming neighborhood establishment that combines a touch of retro charm with a focus on high-quality, comforting fare. Whether you are a long-time Brooklyn resident or just visiting the Prospect Park area, this bakery and pie shop promises a delicious stop for every craving, morning, noon, or night.
The bakery’s unique blend of offerings—from the flaky, rich savory pies reminiscent of traditional Australian, British, and New Zealand cuisine, to the decadent, classic American-style cakes and cupcakes—establishes it as a multifaceted gem. It’s a place where the community gathers for a quick, delicious bite or a sweet indulgence, all within a casual and cozy atmosphere. The dedication to comfort food and prepared meals makes Betty Bakery an indispensable stop for anyone looking for quality, handcrafted food in the borough.
The core of the Betty Bakery experience is its inventive and delicious menu, highlighted by a strong focus on both sweet and savory pies. Locals often seek out the Australian-style savory pies, a flavorful, hearty dish that’s hard to find executed with this level of authenticity elsewhere in New York. From the classic Beef Shepherd’s Pie, with its herbed mashed potato topping, to the rich and savory Steak & Cheese, the pies provide a perfect comfort meal. The Cumin Lamb pie and the Brazilian Chicken, described by customers as a "splash of a sunrise," showcase the bakery's commitment to diverse and robust flavor profiles.
For those with a sweet tooth, the bakery is equally renowned. Offerings like the Valrhona Chocolate cake, Red Velvet cake, and classic fruit pies such as Classic Apple and Dutch Apple are celebrated by patrons for being perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. The array of classic treats, including homemade Twinkies, Ring Dings, Rice Crispy Treats, and Lemon Coconut Bars, tap into a comforting nostalgia that is a hallmark of the "Betty" brand.
The atmosphere at Betty Bakery is intentionally casual and cozy, making it an ideal spot for solo dining, a family outing, or a casual lunch with friends. With local art adorning the walls and a community board by the door, the bakery embodies a true neighborhood feel. Customer reviews frequently praise the warm, friendly service and the overall inviting vibe, despite some noting the small seating area. It is clearly a place that is family-friendly and is a self-identified transgender safespace, showcasing its commitment to being a truly inclusive spot in the community.
The popularity of Betty Bakery for its breakfast and lunch options highlights its appeal as an all-day dining destination. The breakfast pies, such as the Moroccan Breakfast, are a unique and hearty way to start the day. The convenience of a quick bite, combined with a quality coffee selection, makes it a favorite among busy New Yorkers.
The savory pies are notably popular and can be purchased fresh or frozen to enjoy later, which many local New Yorkers appreciate for stocking their freezers with easy, quality meal options. The price point, typically around $9 to $13 for a savory pie, reflects the hand-crafted, high-quality nature of the ingredients and the Australian-style preparation, which includes a flaky, buttery crust.
The menu's international flair, with influences ranging from Brazilian to Moroccan, sets Betty Bakery apart from traditional New York bakeries. The Brazilian chicken pie, with its Cuban-inspired sofrito, is one such example of the global influences that elevate the menu. The Steak & Cheese pie, with braised short rib seasoned with rosemary and thyme, shows the care and depth of flavor in each offering.
The constant stream of positive feedback for the savory pies and select sweets, such as the carrot cake and red velvet, underscores the bakery's consistent quality. Even customers who initially came in looking for other specific items, like the "curly brunettes" cookie, left delighted with their finds. The staff is often mentioned as being great with recommendations, ensuring that every customer finds the perfect treat or meal.
Betty Bakery also takes pride in its selection of beverages, which includes great coffee and a variety of teas. While the specific lavender matcha mentioned in one review was unavailable, other options like the hibiscus tea are noted as wonderful. For those who require milk alternatives, the staff is accommodating, though customers should be aware of potential 'add-on' costs.
The atmosphere and offerings are clearly aimed at creating a memorable and delicious experience. The delightful "old timey quirky music" contributes to the charming environment, making a visit to Betty Bakery feel like a pleasant escape in the middle of Brooklyn. It’s a place that fosters community, good food, and great conversation.
For those seeking a bakery that does more than just sweets, or for anyone who appreciates a truly authentic, savory pie, Betty Bakery is a must-visit. Its commitment to quality comfort food, its inclusive atmosphere, and its unique, globally-inspired menu make it a truly special establishment in the New York food scene. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I miss DUB Pies' Ozzy style savory pies, so I searched and found out that Betty Bakery had savory similarly styled pies.I visited in the evening and it is a quaint hole in the wall. A seat or two inside and a table outside. Local art on the wall and a community board by the door. I love stuff like this. It shows you are in a nice neighborhood. The sweets in cookie jars are easily accessible, and nice and large. The curly brunettes were something I never tried before. Delicious. No lavender matcha iced tea at the time but the hibiscus tea was wonderful. The main event: I ordered the steak and cheese pie. My guest ordered the Brazilian chicken. The pies were delicious. You could taste the fresh herbs, and Cholula hot sauce and HB sauce (a brown ketchup kind of sauce from the UK) were available. I recommend using both.Baby chunks of beef surrounded by rich melted cheese, complemented by the herbal rosemary. Under a flaky, buttery crust. Truly delicious.I tried the Brazilian chicken, with it's sofrito, delicate chicken, it was like a splash of a sunrise, I adored it.Our cashier and pie-prepper, Noah was kind but a bit inattentive when we asked for some water initially. However, he was helpful overall. I took home 4 various other frozen pies to try later. It is a bit pricy, but definitely worth trying out. Your average savory pie will be ~$10-13 here. $5 for a 16 oz tea. ~$3-$4 for big sweets.I plan to try the main location on Atlantic with a date!
August 09 · Anupam ChopraLove the old timey quirky music! The young person working was great with recommendations and checking the price on things for me! That milk alternative add ons “add on” after a while after all 😅. Excited to try the Thai chicken curry pie for lunch today.
July 16 · Alexis DavisWhile visiting my son and daughter in law in Brooklyn, they couldn’t wait to introduce us to Betty Bakery. We ordered several savory pot pies including the steak and cheese, the Argentine Empanada, and spinach and cheese. They warmed them up for us and we enjoyed them right away. So flavorful and so perfect for a cold December morning. We also got a few desserts including the chocolate cake, the homemade Twinkie, and the carrot cake. I don’t normally eat dessert for breakfast but brunch, yes. The chocolate cake is delicious and rich and easily shareable among a few people. Looking forward to going back again.
December 14 · Ron HoopesOrdered a cake online for my wife's birthday. When I got the cake it was still kind of frozen which is no big deal but one it fully defrosted the cake was insanely dry and the frosting and filling tasted like horrible freezer burn. I contacted them via email and they offered credit. I asked for a refund and they never responded. Terrible service when you are charging 80$ for a cake.
July 25 · JesseThe shepherd’s pie was absolutely incredible! Gem was a lovely server—friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations to help me find the perfect pie. Highly recommend!
