Niagara Introduce
For more than two decades, Niagara has been a cornerstone of New York City's East Village, standing as a testament to the neighborhood's vibrant and enduring spirit. Opened in 1997 by a group of musicians and artists, including Jesse Malin, this legendary spot has always been about more than just serving drinks; it's a creative hub, a dance club, and a live music venue all rolled into one. Located on Avenue A, directly across from Tompkins Square Park, Niagara embodies the cool, casual, and slightly rebellious energy that defines the East Village. It's a place where artists, locals, and a diverse crowd of people come together to enjoy good music, great drinks, and a sense of community that is increasingly rare in the city.
The atmosphere at Niagara is a major part of its appeal. It's described as casual, cozy, and trendy, creating a welcoming and relaxed environment that feels like a neighborhood bar with a rock-and-roll heart. The decor, with its vintage signs and punk-rock aesthetics, pays homage to the area's rich musical history. The bar’s rich history, which includes being a key location in the birth of the hardcore punk scene, gives it a unique sense of place. On any given night, you might find yourself sipping a cocktail during a chill happy hour, dancing to a DJ's set, or catching an intimate live performance by a local or touring band. This versatility is what makes Niagara so beloved; it can be whatever you need it to be, whether it’s a laid-back spot for a quiet conversation or the center of your night out. It is also well known as a venue that is LGBTQ+ friendly, with a diverse crowd that reflects the inclusive nature of the East Village.
While the bar has received some highly critical negative reviews regarding staff behavior, it is important to note that many other patrons have had positive experiences. The bar has a reputation for being a place with a great vibe, where many have enjoyed the friendly and welcoming nature of the staff. This contrast suggests that while some have had poor experiences, others have found the atmosphere and service to be exceptional, highlighting the importance of individual experiences.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This bar has got a great vibe. It's chill and has an incredible happy hour. The bartender, Morgan, is a total sweetheart and made us feel welcome as we tirelessly stumbled in with our luggage after a long walk from Penn Station. She served us up some cold beers to perk us right up!
February 23 · Marcos Bolaños (The Flavor Analyst)Most racist place ever!! The bartender begged for a tip and said racist slurs to our group. I don’t even know how this bar is in business after so many negative reviews/comments!Very disappointing experience the staff is absolutely racist. They could definitely improve their experience with better management and learning how to treat customers with respect
July 05 · Rikin ShahNiagra has east village history behind it, it’s been around. But overall the experience is just ok. We went in a Friday and it was packed with a line. The space was packed in like canned fish and movement was impossible. It was so loud we couldn’t have a decent conversation. The staff was ok they just did there jobs with little enthusiasm. The drinks were standard, I got my usual martini. Long bathroom line. It was kind of a dumb collage spot. If you go there expect waiting most of the time. The Sunday we went by and it was very different very chill bartenders were super friendly and drinks were perfect. I recommend go on Sunday. We will be stopping by again in a few months for a follow up and video will be posted via TikTok and Insta
June 26 · BarExamEmmaabsolutely disgusting inside. it'll sound like its popping but its always empty and they never clean. stingy with the alcohol and will racially profile guests inside and outside. refused to give people who are not white drinks.
April 26 · Anna YoonMy good friend Nathan Shi was the DJ for the night here and I came out with my friends and had a great experience! Music was a whole vibe and I enjoyed my time here!
September 28 · Lucas Veintimilla
