What is Worth Choosing
When visiting El Economico Restaurant, the sheer variety can be a little overwhelming, but certain dishes stand out as must-try options that define the Dominican experience. The core of the menu is built around comfort and flavor, and there are a few items and categories that are particularly worth choosing.
Firstly, diving into the main dishes is essential. The Roast Pork (Pernil) is often celebrated for its tender, juicy meat and crispy skin, and is a staple of authentic Dominican cooking. Pair it with a side of White or Yellow Rice and Habichuelas (Beans) for the classic “La Bandera” plate, which is the heart of the cuisine.
The Mofongo section is another area not to be missed. This dish of mashed plantains is a Caribbean icon, and the restaurant offers appealing variations. For a savory treat, try the Chicharron de Cerdo (Pork Rind) Mofongo or the Camarofongo (Shrimp Mofongo). Its unique texture and savory flavor make it a truly memorable choice.
For those looking for a quick and satisfying meal, the Lunch Specials and Combos are excellent value. They bundle favorites like Rotisserie Chicken or Chicken Chunks with Bone with rice and sides, making for a substantial and affordable meal. The Frituras / Aperitivos are perfect for sharing or as a smaller indulgence; the Pastelitos (Meat Patties) and Tostones (Green Plantains) are popular choices.
Finally, no visit is complete without sampling one of the Jugos y Batidas (Shakes & Natural Juices). The Morir Soñando (Milk with Orange Juice) is a traditional Dominican drink—sweet, creamy, and incredibly refreshing—or you can opt for a shake made with tropical fruits like Papaya (Lechoza) or Mamey. And for dessert, the Tres Leches or Flan offers a sweet, authentic finish to a savory meal. These options, all offered at prices that live up to the “Economico” name, ensure a flavorful, authentic, and satisfying Dominican meal right in the Bronx.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This was a great place! As the name suggests, you can eat a lot for a great price. Everything was so savory and authentic. I found the seasoning salty, but I normally eat low on salt, so just be aware that this is how Dominican food usually is. They have a wide menu selection and everything seems to be cooked right and fresh. Highly recommend this place!
November 28 · Alex RodríguezVery unpleasant staff, they talk about you right in front of you especially when they realize that you don't speak Spanish. They act like gate keepers when ppl of non spanish decent come in to their establishment order food. They will talk spanish speaking customers before you even if they come after you. The chicken mofongo was bland and soggy. Had high hopes for this place because a good friend of mine recommended it, but this will be my 1st and last time giving them my business.
April 17 · C EWonderful inexpensive real Dominican food and ambiance. Love the food, the counter top seating (although there are tables in the back and upstairs), the drinks (fresh orange juice, coffee more like an extra large expresso... for less than 2.00$..take that Starbucks...ice cold Caronas with the slice of lime). There's all kinds of delicious food; I love chicken and rice and beans. Also the stew. Feeds me for 2 days... maybe 3 for 7.00$ Where can you beat that in NYC? It's always super busy but the noise just comes with the territory; gives the place more flavor. I've been eating here since 1998. Not much has changed and that's one of the things I love about El Economico. I can always count on excellent food at affordable prices. I don't speak Spanish and not once has anyone gotten my order wrong over that 20 year span nor have I ever waited more than 5 - 10 minutes to be served. They even deliver. What's not to like? It's easy to get here situated on the Broadway just shy of 231st St. I highly recommend El Economico.
May 19 · Mary KellyI am ashamed of this restaurant, cause I never had a problem and today I had a problem. I ordered a whole chicken with green plantains. I told the lady that they gave me small container of green plantains which you didn’t even have a whole one of plantings and I call back she had an attitude, and I told her that she didn’t have to have an attitude that she needs to explain to the customer What they’re getting, and I felt that that was wrong
June 29 · Yadiry PerezFood was really good. The women there are very nice and funny.
