What is worth choosing
Choosing Famous Pita is a decision for quality, authenticity, and a true taste of the Mediterranean right here in New York. The restaurant excels in several key areas that make it a compelling choice over other dining establishments.
First and foremost is the Certified Kosher Status. For many local diners, the supervision by the Vaad of the Five Towns and Far Rockaway is non-negotiable, providing peace of mind alongside a delicious meal. This level of certification ensures rigorous standards are met, appealing to a broad demographic looking for dependable Kosher meat dining.
Second, the Shawarma is a standout. As customer reviews suggest, the shawarma is arguably the best in the New York area. Whether you order it stuffed in a fresh Pita, wrapped in a large Laffa, or served as a complete Plate meal, the spice blend and quality of the shredded baby boneless chicken are consistent and deeply satisfying. This signature dish alone is reason enough to visit.
Finally, the breadth of the authentic Israeli menu is a major draw. Beyond the main meat offerings from the grill—which include Baby Chicken, Beef Shish Kebob, and Mixed Grill options—the dedication to sides, dips, and comfort food is evident. The abundance of fresh salads and house-made dips like Hummus and Babaganush, along with specialty items like Sabich and the Thursday Chulent special, offers a truly comprehensive and authentic Middle Eastern experience. You can enjoy a quick and healthy small plate, like a generous side of Falafel Balls, or indulge in a full grilled feast. The menu's variety, combined with its focus on fresh, healthy options and hearty comfort food, makes Famous Pita the perfect choice for virtually any appetite in Hewlett, NY.

Famous Pita Reviews

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1★★★☆☆ Amazing Food, But the Service Needs a Major OverhaulThis review is tough to write because the food at Famous Pita is truly exceptional. It's a solid 5-star experience, and a huge part of that is thanks to the 5-star cook. This chef is a true gem. Not only does he create incredible food, but he also makes a genuine effort to connect with customers. He's Spanish and has taken the time to learn Hebrew, which is a wonderful and welcoming touch that makes you feel appreciated and happy to be there. However, the amazing food is completely overshadowed by a 0-star experience with the cashier. He was the opposite of welcoming—cold, detached, and seemed annoyed by our very presence. When we tried to order, he didn't explain the menu at all. When asked for shawarma, his only response was a clipped, "What? What? What?" as if we were supposed to be mind readers and already know the various options for serving it. This made the ordering process incredibly difficult and frustrating. To make matters worse, he was completely uncommunicative about the charges, simply barking, "Cash or card?" with no breakdown of the cost. The whole interaction felt like we were a nuisance. He also seemed annoyed when we asked for containers to take some of our food to go.Finally, there was the issue of cleaning the table. There are no signs indicating that customers are expected to bus their own tables. Yet, as we were leaving, the cashier seemed agitated that we were getting up without cleaning up after ourselves. While I understand the desire for a clean space, the lack of communication and the high prices they charge suggest they should have dedicated staff for this, not rely on the customers to do the work of a busser. As an executive chef myself, I understand the many challenges of running a restaurant, but there is no excuse for such cold and unwelcoming service. Customer care is paramount, and it's a shame that the front-of-house experience doesn't match the quality of the food.
August 31 · Eli BrownOMG that's what I have to say !Second time visiting and was dreaming on coming back to this amazing shawarma pita ever had in NY maybe even better than Israel.Amazing amazing quality and tastes that are 100% accurate to the traditional dish that we all grew on in Israel. Fresh clean friendly and again very very yummy. I Highly recommend a visit
May 22 · Julie FissMy wife’s food was cold. Didn’t need to be. My sandwich was ok. The soup was great. I did not like the way they cut the laffa. Made it more challenging to eat. The sweet potato was cold. Didn’t need to be. Shawarma was very good. Needs someone to constantly clean. Found it messy in front and back.
February 17 · Yehiel M Kalish⭐ 1 Star – Not so “Famous” after allI honestly don’t know how this place is still running. The guy who owns or works here has no idea what he’s doing rude, arrogant, and completely clueless about customer service. He acts like he’s doing you a favor by taking your order. If this is what “Famous Pita” stands for, then it’s just bullying customers with an attitude. The hygiene? Don’t even get me started. The place looks and smells like it hasn’t been properly cleaned in ages. I wouldn’t be surprised if the health department shows up soon.If you run a business that serves people, you should know how to talk to people. Someone please sign this guy up for a basic manners or behavior class I hear some schools offer them for free.Save your time, your money, and your appetite. There are way better spots nearby that treat people with respect and know what cleanliness means.
July 23 · Emran AhmedI’ve never experienced such disgraceful and disrespectful service in my life.As a fairly regular customer, I was shocked when the person at the counter aggressively and loudly refused — in front of other customers — my polite request for a small side of pickles.Something that’s considered completely standard in any shawarma place around the world.I was genuinely embarrassed by the way he yelled and behaved.I just took my food and left.
