Ginger's Bar Introduce
A staple of Brooklyn's vibrant LGBTQ+ community, Ginger's Bar stands as a genuine, historic, and beloved institution in the heart of Park Slope. For decades, it has served as far more than just a place to grab a drink; it is a safe, cozy, and proudly queer space—one of the few remaining dedicated lesbian bars in New York City. Operating as a classic, unpretentious Irish dive bar, Ginger's perfectly blends its welcoming neighborhood feel with a commitment to celebrating LGBTQ+ life, offering a consistently real and effortlessly charming experience through all of New York's ever-changing nightlife trends.
New Yorkers seeking an authentic, low-key spot with a rich history and strong community ties will find Ginger's Bar to be an indispensable stop. It's a place where you can feel the warmth of a true neighborhood gathering spot, where the drinks are classic, the crowds are friendly, and the focus is always on creating a safe and centered experience for queer women and the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum.
Ginger's proudly maintains a casual and cozy atmosphere, characterized by a dive bar aesthetic that is both comforting and authentic. It successfully manages to be both a laid-back, woman-friendly neighborhood bar and a critical piece of Brooklyn's queer history. This dual identity ensures that everyone—from solo visitors to large groups, from long-time patrons to curious tourists—feels immediately at home in this iconic Park Slope establishment.
The bar's long-standing status is a testament to its genuine appeal. It has been cited in multiple roundups of notable LGBTQ+ bars in New York City and is frequently highlighted as a rare and necessary lesbian-focused space in modern nightlife. By remaining true to its roots as a scrappy, real, and accessible spot, Ginger's Bar offers a refreshing contrast to the more polished venues across the city.
The enduring legacy of Ginger's Bar in the Park Slope neighborhood cannot be overstated. It opened its doors on Saint Patrick's Day in 2000, and despite the closure of other notable queer spaces in the area, it has remained a steadfast beacon for the community. This persistence, combined with its unwavering commitment to being a safe and centered space, has cemented its place as a living love letter to Brooklyn queers. Patrons often describe the feeling of stepping into a "queer time capsule"—a place where you can truly relax and feel like the majority. It’s the kind of establishment that fosters community, where strangers discuss everything from the latest neighborhood news to astrology by midnight, proving its value transcends simply serving beverages.
In a city as dynamic and fast-paced as New York, Ginger's Bar offers a grounding, essential experience. It's a key part of the local social fabric, providing essential service and sanctuary to those who need it most. The establishment's commitment to the dive-style ethos—unpretentious, affordable, and full of character—is what makes it a local favorite and a true destination spot for anyone visiting Brooklyn.
Moreover, the establishment's welcoming ethos extends to all members of the LGBTQ+ community, creating an inclusive and diverse crowd. While proudly rooted as a lesbian bar, it is known for being open to all comers—genderqueer folk, gay men, and allies alike—making it a richly woven tapestry of New York's queer life.
Ultimately, Ginger's Bar is celebrated not just for its operational longevity, but for its vital cultural role. It is a necessary gathering place, a venue for cultural expression, and a consistent source of joy and community support in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

September 26 · Rachel MClassic chill sapphic space!! Support queer femme small businesses! :) Both outdoor and indoor spaces, dancing, pool, and bar. Note that she’s cash only, although there is an ATM on site. Lots of fun events!! Open late! : )
August 06 · D VMy friends and I went to Ginger’s earlier today after the pride parade in Manhattan. It had a great atmosphere and drinks. We wound up leaving to get food and were told we were welcome back to eat our food there as long as we cleaned up after ourselves. When we came back we were let in by the bouncer, but the bar tender called us over to re-check my friends ID. They asked her a bunch of questions related to her age and she answered every single one correctly but we were still kicked out. The bar tender was condescending and made a completely unnecessary comment to my friend. We’re turning 25 this year… They handled this unprofessionally and didn’t even use an ID scanner to verify the validity of it. It was very confusing because when we were in earlier, we were served alcohol without our IDs being checked by a different bar tender. I wish we had a better experience. The bar had a lot of potential.
June 29 · Fiona StuartLove to come here with friends! The service is ….. interesting? But I’m sure it’s because the staff probably puts up with a lot. Don’t let that get in the way of having a good time though! I still give it 5 stars because it’s a place we always have a nice time at, I like that they have a pool table and outdoor seating. The people working door are always sweet and most of the bartenders are decent. I would recommend coming with friends to hang out after work.
April 01 · JasonI don’t even drink & wear this bar’s hat with pride. Community-driven events, fun dancing, always the best energy. Home sweet home.
