Navaratna Introduce
For residents and visitors in Connecticut seeking an authentic and diverse Indian culinary experience, look no further than Navaratna in Stamford. This establishment has earned a stellar reputation for specializing in pure vegetarian Indian cuisine, featuring a remarkably comprehensive menu that spans the rich and varied flavors of both North and South India. It is a true 'gem'—as its name, translating to 'nine gems' in Sanskrit, suggests—bringing a harmonious blend of traditional recipes to the local dining scene.
Navaratna is particularly noteworthy for its commitment to serving only vegetarian fare, which allows the kitchen to excel in crafting plant-based dishes that are both flavorful and deeply rooted in Indian culinary heritage. The focus here is on authenticity and a wealth of options, meaning diners will find everything from street food classics to regional curries and specialty breads, ensuring an exciting journey for the palate with every visit. Whether you are a dedicated vegetarian, exploring meatless options, or simply a lover of Indian food, the quality and variety at this Stamford location are impressive.
A significant highlight that sets Navaratna apart in the Connecticut landscape is its designation as a fully Kosher eatery. This dedication to strict dietary standards expands its accessibility and makes it a trusted destination for many in the local community who observe Kosher guidelines. The restaurant maintains a casual and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for various occasions, including a quick bite during lunch, a comfortable dinner, or even solo dining. Its diverse menu and welcoming environment have made it popular among both local groups and tourists exploring the Stamford area.
The extensive menu is thoughtfully organized, providing clear distinctions between regional specialties. From the coconut-rich, tangy flavors characteristic of South Indian cooking to the creamier, aromatic gravies found in North Indian dishes, the offering truly covers the breadth of the subcontinent. One can easily transition from savoring a light, crispy Dosa to indulging in a hearty, North Indian Paneer Tikka Masala, all under one roof. The dedication to freshly prepared food, often using traditional techniques, is evident in the rich flavors and aromas.
The culinary journey begins with a selection of appetizers, or 'Aarambam,' which include South Indian staples like the savory Medu Vada (lentil doughnuts) and the crowd-pleasing Hara Bahara Kebab, made from spinach, paneer, and green chili. Moving on, the 'Mumbai Street Chaat Wala' section offers delightful, tangy snacks such as Samosa Chaat and Bhel Puri. The restaurant's mastery of regional cooking continues with its famous Dosas and Uttappams, offering varieties like the paper-thin Plain Dosa, the spicy Madurai Malli Dosa, and thick, flavorful Mixed Vegetables Uttappam.
The main course features a wide array of curries. The 'North Indian Curry' section boasts popular dishes like Palak Paneer, Dal Makhani, and the creamy, signature Navaratna Korma. In contrast, the 'South Indian Curry' section invites exploration with unique, flavor-packed options such as Allepy Vegetable Curry with coconut and mango, and the tangy Bhagara Baingan. Diners will also find a dedicated 'Indo Chinese' section, offering fusion favorites like Chili Paneer and Gobi Manchurian, catering to modern tastes while remaining strictly vegetarian.
Carbohydrates are equally diverse, with an entire section dedicated to 'Rice Varieties'—including traditional dishes like Thayir Sadam (yogurt rice), Tamarind Rice, and aromatic Vegetable Biryani—and a 'Bread Corner' with Aloo Paratha, fluffy Bhatura, and the flaky Veechu Paratha.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1During our visit to Stamford, we treated ourselves to an early dinner and were delighted with authentic, flavorful Indian cuisine. To top it off, we tried an Indian beer that paired perfectly and added to the experience. The warm hospitality of the server made our evening even more enjoyable. A truly memorable dinner outing with great food, drinks, and companyAmong many dishes I enjoyed Mashala Dosha more
September 18 · Lila BaniyaThis kosher eatery seems underrated to me. Vegetarian Indian food made by natives using traditional recipes means you’re going to enjoy the end product. Especially if they can comply with kosher requirements!Wait staff was friendly enough and helpful in accommodating our requests and inquiries. Water is served without ice, Americans beware! Portions are very good, so don’t let your eyes get too big, choose wisely or prepare for leftovers!Get the lentil donuts! They’re savory and come with dipping sauces. Quite the treat!
September 01 · Chaim GoldbergFor being Kosher and Indian it's really good. One issue is i would like to see pictures to be able to order. But then again, if more clients made reviews with pictures, it would be helpful so their Google maps to have more pictures. The food is really good. I liked the south lunch menu. Also, their coconut curry soup is preaty good. I liked everything we ordered. They could work on the presentation, and they need to give the place a little makeover. But the food is great
January 12 · Leora SchiffmanWonderful vegetarian food. Great variety of dishes. Metered street parking. Quick service. Sticky floors for some reason.
June 09 · Angela TauberOctober 26, 2024.I had been wanting to try out this place for several months now, ever since a friend shared their exceedingly positive review about this South Indian vegetarian restaurant. It had a lot of items that are usually not available in typical `Indian' restaurants in USA which invariably are mostly `North Indian'.Overall, the food was tasty, authentic, and affordable ($80 for 3 members). We ate the following.1. Adai avial (அடை அவியல்)-- The adai is slightly oily. The avial was good, lots of veggies, and a tad too much of asafoetida (பெருங்காயம்).2. Andra masala dosa was very spicy/hot! The waitress did mention it'll be spicy, but it was way more than I expected.3. Idly (இட்லி) -- soft and nice, felt fresh. All chutneys had a separate tadka on top while being served, it felt excessive.4. Cauliflower -- Was oily and crispy, and I didn't actually expect it to be any different. It was okayish.5. South Indian meals had several veggie dishes, in addition to sambar, rasam, dal.a. கோவக்காய்(Tindora) korma - had a rich gravy.b. கீரை பருப்பு(Spinach dal) - was chewy.c. பாகக்காய்(Bitter gourd) in tomato gravy - was okayish. This was another member's item, and I just tasted a few sub-items.6. Ada pradaman (அடை பிரதமன்) -- Nice and sweet, combination of coconut milk and jaggery was nice. The rice (or was it coconut?) flakes were too many and also felt a bit undercooked.
