Rao's Introduce
In a city overflowing with world-class dining options, Rao's stands apart not just as a restaurant, but as a legendary institution. Since its founding in 1896, this East Harlem establishment has evolved from a local saloon into one of the most exclusive and celebrated Italian restaurants in the world. It’s a place steeped in history and tradition, offering an experience that is far more than just a meal. For New Yorkers and those who appreciate the city's rich culture, Rao's represents a quintessential "bucket list" destination. This article delves into the unique qualities that define Rao's, from its storied past to the exceptional food and unforgettable atmosphere that continue to captivate those lucky enough to get a seat.
The atmosphere at Rao's is a main attraction in itself. It’s an intimate, cozy, and historic space that feels like stepping back in time. With its vintage decor and walls adorned with photographs of long-time patrons and celebrities, the restaurant exudes a warm, family-like feel. This ambiance is a stark contrast to many of the city's trendier spots, offering a sense of permanence and authenticity that is increasingly rare. The dimly lit dining room, the snug tables, and the overall charm create a setting that is both romantic and celebratory, making it ideal for special occasions. It’s a place where the simple, classic food feeds both the body and the soul, creating a feeling of "Sunday dinner" every night of the week.
Located at 455 E 114th St, New York, NY 10029, USA, Rao's is nestled in the vibrant and historic East Harlem neighborhood. The restaurant is a significant part of the area's cultural heritage. While the neighborhood may have a reputation, the restaurant is a safe haven and a destination in itself. It is recommended to travel by taxi or ride-share to the location. The restaurant's iconic status means that many people make a special pilgrimage to this specific corner of the city. While the dining room is small and intimate, the restaurant is committed to accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible restroom. This ensures that patrons with mobility needs can still enjoy the experience comfortably. Its well-known status means that it is a point of interest for many, with its presence solidifying the neighborhood’s place in the city's culinary history.
Rao's offers a dining experience that is both exclusive and comprehensive. The primary service options include dine-in, takeout, and delivery, although securing a dine-in reservation is famously challenging. For those who can’t get a table, the availability of their premium sauces and pastas for purchase is a highlight. The restaurant is also known for its classic bar onsite. The menu includes a variety of offerings, from a curated wine list to expertly crafted cocktails. The types of services and offerings are:
Dining Options: The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner, with full table service. Dessert is also available to complete the dining experience.
Beverages: The bar onsite offers a fantastic selection of alcohol, beer, cocktails, coffee, hard liquor, and a great wine list, catering to a wide range of preferences.
Food Offerings: The menu is centered on traditional Southern Italian comfort food. While the dining experience is focused on classics, the restaurant also sells its premium sauces, pastas, marinades, dressings, and other specialty items for home use.
Payments: The restaurant accepts credit cards and debit cards for payment, though it's important to note the experience is "cash only" for tips, so plan accordingly.
The highlights of Rao's are what elevate it from a restaurant to a true cultural landmark. The food is, of course, a major draw. The legendary status of their basic marinara sauce and dishes like their famous meatballs and lemon chicken are well-documented. A concierge and event planner noted that the food is "unreal" and "I still dream about how great the food was." The menu focuses on simple, well-executed comfort food that has stood the test of time. Beyond the food, the experience itself is a key highlight. The "old school" feel is a significant part of its charm. The Maitre D's personal attention, as mentioned in a customer review, where he sits down to explain the menu and help you order, is an example of the unique, personalized service that has become a rarity. The atmosphere is consistently praised as cozy, historic, and romantic. The restaurant is popular for both lunch and dinner and is a perfect spot for those seeking a romantic or upscale dining experience. The availability of great cocktails, coffee, and a great wine list adds to the overall appeal, ensuring a complete and high-quality experience from start to finish. The exclusive nature of the dining room, which has only ten tables and is notoriously difficult to get into, only adds to its mystique and status as a must-visit destination.
Exceptional Food: The classic Southern Italian cuisine is described as "unreal," with the basic marinara sauce being a particular highlight.
Historic and Exclusive Atmosphere: The cozy, historic, and romantic setting is a major draw, providing a unique and memorable experience.
Personalized Service: The old-school, personalized attention from the staff, including the Maitre D, contributes to a feeling of being a valued guest.
Full-Service Bar: A great selection of cocktails, wine, and other beverages complements the meal perfectly.
Iconic Status: The restaurant is a true NYC bucket list item, known for its exclusivity and long-standing history.
Retail Products: For those unable to secure a reservation, the availability of their famous sauces and pastas for home use is a huge plus.

What is worth choosing about Rao's? It's the intangible elements that define its value. While many restaurants can offer delicious food, very few can offer a true, living piece of New York history. The fact that the restaurant has been in operation for over a century and has maintained its small, intimate size makes it a rare jewel. The experience is not about a flashy menu or a trendy design; it's about the authenticity of the food and the unparalleled sense of place. A visit to Rao's is a chance to participate in a storied tradition, to feel the history that permeates its walls, and to enjoy a meal that has been perfected over generations. The personalized service, from the staff to the Maitre D', makes you feel like you are part of an exclusive club, even if just for one night. For those who appreciate history, tradition, and a truly unique dining experience, Rao's is a choice that lives up to its hype and delivers an experience that is nothing short of a bucket list item.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I own a concierge and event planning agency, so I quite literally go to all types of incredible restaurants for a living. None can be compared to Rao’s. It’s not only “worth the hype”, but from the second you walk up to the restaurant, you feel the history. The food is obviously unreal, but it’s the experience that will really change you. The Maitre D, Joe, sits down with you and explains the menu to you. It’s so old school and he’s great at helping you order exactly enough food. I still dream about how great the food was, and to say I can’t wait to go back is an extreme understatement. It was truly a bucket list item for me to go there, and if anyone gets the opportunity to go, take it—you will not be disappointed! The ONLY thing is, it’s “cash only” so plan accordingly!
March 12 · Jackie BotelhoI am really, fully satisfied with a large meal of less heavy, healthier, and possibly lower gluten Italian durum wheat spaghetti topped with quality marinara sauce. I am even a picky snob as marinara should be ideally on its own a well seasoned and satisfying tomato sauce. The basic marinara sauce they make is superb. I love it and a dried parsley dash makes the dish. I wish to visit the restaurant. I love the pizza sauce on homemade honey whole wheat dough.🥢🍅 🍕
August 31 · Claire Mae Elizabeth GrangeOh! My! Gosh!! Hello! I'm Deborah. I found some of your frozen meals, pizza and sauces at Walmart here in Arab Alabama 👍 I've never heard of you until I looked you up to see if you have restaurants, and of course your product sold at Walmart that prompted me to look you up. Your pizza sauce is totally amazing! I must have at least 50 jars. I bought all of them in the store the other day 😁 The sauce is so delicious that it prompted me to try out your frozen meals. Your four cheese ravioli your lasagna and your chicken parmesan is outstanding!!! I haven't tried your pizza yet, but I'm about to try the cheese one next time I go to the store and I'm just going to add some extra toppings to it. If your food taste this good just from the grocery store, I can imagine how amazingly delicious it will taste in your restaurants!!❤️🕊️ I wish I could try your restaurant, but unfortunately there's none of your restaurants around my area. I will be moving back to California soon Woodland California which is around the Sacramento area. It would be nice if you can get a restaurant there! If you did I would bring my sleeping bag and camp outside Lol 🤣 Oh my gosh I just can't believe how good your food is. I'm telling everybody about it!! Walmart can't keep up with me. I keep buying all your pizza sauce! Walmart also sells your pasta sauce as well. I haven't tried those. I bought the caramelized onion one and the marinara one and I haven't tried those yet, but I'm sure they're going to be totally delicious. Thank you so much for your delicious food. There's not much restaurants here in this little town that I live in so I really appreciate your food!! 🍕 🍝 🫙 Happy Father's Day to all the dad's out there and y'all have a blessed rest of the weekend and the next following week 🙏😇🙏 I give you 10 Stars for your wonderful food!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆❤️🕊️🌹🌹🌹 I almost forgot your tomato basil soup sold in jars and your Italian wedding soup both very delicious 😋 You have Many! Dishes in the frozen section of the grocery store. So many that I can't keep up with adding them to this review 😋 I had to go to Guntersville Alabama to the Publix market there where they sell even More! Dishes. I bought your meatballs in sauce. Haven't tried them yet, but I already know they are Delish!!😋😋 I also bought your variety meat pizza, your vegetarian lasagna and other pasta dishes with white sauce😋 I would love to try and buy on a regular basis your eggplant Parmesan but none of the stores have it. I heard that Target sells it. I may have to go there as well. I'm going to have to buy a second freezer to fit all your delishes dishes because my freezer is packed with Rao's s only! Store bought frozen meals I will ever buy. 😋😋😋 Thank you for making it possible for the world to have the chance to have your food in Thier freezers and cupboards. I also bought four more of your soups. Different ones as well ❤️🩹😋😋😋🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ God Bless you and your family 🙏😇🙏
