Tempura Matsui Introduce
In a city as culinarily diverse as New York, true authenticity can be a rare and treasured find. Tempura Matsui, a discreet and elegant Japanese restaurant in Midtown East, offers a dining experience that feels like a genuine journey to Japan. Unlike many of the more casual or fusion-focused eateries, this establishment is dedicated to the art of tempura, elevating it from a common appetizer to the centerpiece of a sophisticated omakase course. The moment you find this hidden gem, tucked away by the entrance of a hotel, you’re transported into a serene, zen-like interior that sets the perfect tone for the meal to come. For New Yorkers who have a deep appreciation for the subtleties of Japanese cuisine, or for anyone seeking to experience what high-quality tempura truly is, Tempura Matsui is an essential destination.
The restaurant's focus on tempura is a testament to its commitment to tradition and quality. Tempura here is described by patrons as light, crispy, and not at all heavy—a stark contrast to the often greasy, battered versions found elsewhere. Each piece, from fresh vegetables to delicate seafood, is a "masterpiece" of culinary skill. The dining experience is not just about the food; it’s an immersive event. The opportunity to sit at the counter and watch the chefs expertly fry each piece of tempura is a highlight that adds to the authenticity and provides a sense of connection to the meal. This meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication to the craft is what truly sets Tempura Matsui apart in New York's competitive fine dining landscape.
The overall atmosphere is quiet, cozy, and romantic, making it a perfect spot for a special occasion or a memorable solo dining experience. While the restaurant has a quiet elegance, it remains trendy and welcoming, attracting a discerning crowd of locals and tourists alike. This article will provide a detailed look at what makes Tempura Matsui such a unique and highly-rated establishment, covering everything from its exclusive dining options to its impeccable service and the essential details for planning your visit.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dining here was such a privilege that I cannot wait to go back. After coming back from Japan, finding that just right tempura was nearly impossible, then I was introduced to Tempura Matsui. The tempura is crispy yet light, and the produce ranges from fresh vegetables to delicious seafood. Each and every piece is truly a masterpiece. My favorite pieces were the lotus root (fifth picture) and mushroom (third picture). They were unbelievably delicious. The service was impeccable. I sat at the counter since I wanted to be able to see the chefs frying the tempura, and it was so pleasant to watch. The wait staff were all so friendly and explained each dish with detail, and refilled my tea/drinks when it was empty.I came for lunch to see how it would go and I can say for absolute certainty that I will be back for dinner service.I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to try tempura for what it truly is rather than what it has become in NYC: light, crispy, not heavy, and completely delicious tempura.
July 13 · Cin ElTucked away by the entrance of a hotel, Tempura Matsui feels like a hidden gem. Once inside, the cozy, zen-like Japanese interior sets the perfect tone for the meal.I highly recommend coming for the lunch session—it still offers an impressive variety while being more affordable than dinner. I never realized tempura could be presented in so many ways, and this experience truly changed my perspective on what high-quality tempura can be.Toward the end of the meal, you can choose between a bowl of Tendon (tempura over rice) or Tencha (tempura with tea over rice). The Tendon was our favorite—flavorful, comforting, and almost too much food since we were already full!On drinks: we were a fan of the strawberry drink: it’s non-alcoholic, beautifully made, and surprisingly great as a pairing throughout the meal.Lastly, a special mention to the servers who were attentive during the whole meal: from folding napkins, even offering a small bag to hold my bag so it wouldn’t hang awkwardly under the counter, and just checking in frequently. Absolutely plan to come again!
August 17 · Vivian “Vivventure” WayfarerThis place is outstanding. Tempura is served as omakase and I didn't have too high of an expectation since I thought it would be a bunch of fried stuff. However it was a mixture of Japanese authentic servings along with very well fried dishes. The servings are also good and they offer good sake and draft beer along with cocktails. I really liked their snowcrab and mushroom but everything was fine. Highly recommend!
August 24 · Fernando GrahamWent here for my late birthday dinner. Amazing tempura course. The breading was not excessive and very well fried. Planning to go back with parents soon. Highly recommend if you want high quality tempura.
August 01 · Peter CIt was an amazing omakase style dining as always with a wide variety of tempura dishes. If you like tempura, you must go. Even if you are ok with tempura, you still must go. Their tempura dishes are made at the open counter in front of you. It is thinly battered and not greasy. They also offer sake pairing option (really good pairing). The ambiance is authentic and warm with meticulous service. 🥰
