Nestled in the heart of Midtown, Aquihito offers a truly unique and intimate experience that sets it apart from the typical bustling Manhattan scene. This establishment is not just a bar; it’s a modern Japanese-style drink spot, a place where the art of mixology meets a cozy, friendly atmosphere. For New Yorkers in search of a new favorite haunt, Aquihito represents a perfect blend of high-quality drinks and a relaxed, community-oriented vibe.
The charm of Aquihito lies in its simplicity and genuine approach. It has quickly become a "neighborhood gem," as described by its patrons, offering a relational and intimate space that feels less like a commercial business and more like a friend's living room. This is a place where you can unwind after a long day, enjoy a finely crafted drink, and connect with others in a comfortable setting. The owner, Akihito, is known for his friendly and cooperative nature, which plays a significant role in creating this welcoming environment. His personal touch is a major reason why many people consider Aquihito their regular spot.
This article will provide a detailed look into what makes Aquihito a must-visit destination for anyone in New York City. We'll explore its location, the variety of drinks on its menu, and the special features that contribute to its unique appeal. From its impressive selection of Japanese whiskies to its inclusive atmosphere, Aquihito offers an experience that goes beyond just serving drinks. It’s a space that celebrates good company, great cocktails, and a distinctive cultural flair, making it one of the cooler aspects of NYC’s vibrant nightlife.
Aquihito is a perfect escape from the fast-paced energy of the city, and its location makes it surprisingly accessible. Situated at 359 W 39th St, New York, NY 10018, it is conveniently located in the Garment District of Midtown Manhattan. This makes it an ideal spot for professionals looking to relax after work, tourists exploring the area, or locals seeking a new favorite bar. The bar's location is a key part of its appeal, as it’s within walking distance of numerous offices, theaters, and major transportation hubs like Penn Station and Times Square.
The bar is easy to find, yet maintains an intimate, almost hidden feel that adds to its charm. For those navigating the busy streets of Midtown, Aquihito provides a welcome respite. Its proximity to public transit lines makes it a convenient option for patrons from all over the city. Whether you're coming from another borough or just a few blocks away, getting to Aquihito is straightforward. This central location ensures it's a viable option for a spontaneous drink or a planned evening out.
Once you arrive, the accessibility features of the establishment ensure a comfortable visit for everyone. Aquihito offers a wheelchair accessible restroom, a thoughtful amenity that demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity and welcoming all guests. The combination of a central location and considerate accessibility features means that Aquihito is not just a great bar, but an inclusive and convenient one as well. It’s this attention to detail that makes it stand out as a truly modern and customer-focused establishment in the heart of the city.
Aquihito prides itself on a diverse and well-curated drink menu, specializing in offerings that reflect its Japanese-style bar concept. The services are focused on providing a quality drinking experience in a welcoming environment.
- Dine-in: Aquihito is a dedicated dine-in establishment where guests can enjoy their drinks at the bar or at a table. The intimate setting encourages patrons to relax and socialize, making it an ideal spot for both solo visitors and small groups.
- Alcohol: The core offering is a wide range of alcoholic beverages. The menu is a highlight, featuring an extensive selection that goes beyond typical bar fare.
- Beer: For those who prefer a classic, the bar serves Asahi Super Dry. This option provides a familiar choice for beer lovers and pairs well with the overall theme.
- Hard liquor: The selection of hard liquors is where Aquihito truly shines. It features a fantastic variety of Japanese whiskies, Japanese shochu, and other spirits like gin and vodka. Options range from well-known brands to more unique finds.
- Wine: The bar also offers a selection of wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and sparkling wines like Henri Champliau. This ensures that even wine enthusiasts will find something to enjoy.
While the bar does not serve food, a key service feature that sets it apart is its policy allowing patrons to bring their own outside food. This is a unique and highly appreciated offering that enhances the overall experience, allowing guests to pair their favorite snacks with their chosen drinks, making the outing truly their own.
Aquihito is more than just its drink menu; it offers a full experience defined by a few key highlights. These features contribute to its reputation as a beloved local spot.
- Great Cocktails: The bar is celebrated for its fantastic cocktails, particularly the Japanese-inspired drinks. Signature items like the Japanese Whisky High Ball and Japanese Shochu / Gin / Vodka Fizz are expertly crafted and highly recommended by regulars. The option to customize drinks, such as adding yuzu or ume, also allows for a personalized touch.
- Fast Service: Despite the focus on quality and atmosphere, the service at Aquihito is impressively fast. This is a major plus for New Yorkers who appreciate efficiency. The staff's ability to provide prompt service while maintaining a friendly demeanor contributes to the overall positive experience.
- Casual, Cozy, and Trendy Atmosphere: The vibe is a perfect trifecta of relaxed and stylish. It feels cozy and intimate, making it great for conversations, yet it also has a trendy edge that appeals to a modern, urban crowd. This balance is what makes it feel like a "friend's bar" rather than a formal establishment.
- LGBTQ+ Friendly and Transgender Safespace: Aquihito is a proud and welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community. Being a "transgender safespace" is a significant feature that highlights the bar's commitment to creating a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone. This is a crucial element of what makes it a genuine neighborhood gem.
- Amenities: The bar offers essential amenities like a restroom and Wi-Fi, ensuring a comfortable and convenient visit for all patrons. The wheelchair-accessible restroom further reinforces the bar's commitment to inclusivity.
The combination of these features—from the quality of the drinks to the warmth of the atmosphere—is what makes Aquihito a special place. It’s a bar that truly understands its community and provides a space that is both enjoyable and respectful.

When considering what is worth choosing at Aquihito, the answer is the authenticity and intimacy of the experience. Unlike large, impersonal bars in the city, Aquihito offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a drink in a setting that feels personal and genuine. The availability of this "specific kind of experience" is, as one reviewer noted, one of the cooler aspects of NYC. This is a place where you can step out of the chaos of the city and into a space that is calm, friendly, and focused on quality.
The bar's signature drinks, particularly the Japanese Whisky High Ball and the range of shochu, are a major draw and are definitely worth trying. However, the true value lies in the relational vibe. The owner, Akihito, is a central part of this, and his friendly demeanor makes every visit a pleasant one. You’re not just a customer; you feel like a welcomed guest. This is a significant differentiator. The inclusive atmosphere, especially its role as an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safespace, is another compelling reason to choose this bar. In a city where it can be challenging to find places that feel truly safe and welcoming, Aquihito provides a much-needed haven.
Finally, the ability to bring your own food is a huge plus. It gives you the freedom to create your perfect evening, pairing your favorite snacks with their incredible drinks. In essence, choosing Aquihito means choosing an authentic, intimate, and welcoming experience that is hard to find anywhere else. It’s a true taste of a different kind of New York nightlife—one that prioritizes connection, quality, and a sense of belonging.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I always have an amazing time here! It's such a neighborhood gem. The owner, Akihito, is super friendly, and the vibe feels like you're drinking at your friend's bar.I always get my regular drink - plum gin with soda water and yuzu! They don't serve any food here, but I have seen people bringing outside food.
August 13 · Cindy WReally neat Japanese snack bar kinda place. Really authentic, intimate, relational vibe with a straightforward menu and great service. The availability of this specific kind of experience is one of the cooler aspects of NYC.
June 12 · Rob FritzemeierVery tiny intimate bar. If you're looking for a party this place ain't it, but me and 7 friends came in, hung out and talked. Between the intimate atmosphere and the super friendly bartender it was a great night. The drinks were fairly priced and he put so much care and attention into each of our drinks , down to the amount of head on the asahi. Amazing place for a cool chill night with friends
December 16 · Dylan JonesSmall and intimate place. Perfect for late night snacks and drinks. The Ankimo (monkfish liver) is amazingly delicious!!
September 13 · Emil YaoStopped in and had a couple high balls with my coworker. Had the best conversations and recommendations I’ve had this trip. The bartender was sweet and poured a stiff drink. The patrons were friendly and fun. If I’m ever back in this area I will 1000000% come back here.
