For New Yorkers in search of a genuine taste of Vietnam, Bánh Mì Cô Út stands out as a must-visit destination. This unassuming Vietnamese restaurant and sandwich shop, located on Elizabeth Street in Chinatown, has earned a loyal following for one key reason: its incredible banh mi. Described by customers as a flavor "POW" that transports them back to Hanoi, the sandwiches here are a testament to the power of fresh ingredients and traditional preparation. While the spot is a no-frills, cash-only joint, its focus on quality and flavor is what truly defines it and makes it a favorite among those in the know.
Bánh Mì Cô Út succeeds by focusing on the fundamentals and executing them flawlessly. The star of the show is, without a doubt, the bread. Customers consistently rave about its quality, noting that it's "flaky, light and airy throughout" and doesn't get soggy. This commitment to fresh, high-quality bread is the foundation for a perfect banh mi. The fillings are equally impressive, with flavors that are complex, subtle, and well-balanced. The pate, in particular, is highlighted for its great consistency and for acting as the "glue" that holds all the different meats and vegetables together. Beyond the banh mi, the menu offers other Vietnamese classics like pho and sticky rice dishes, which have also received rave reviews. The friendly and to-the-point service ensures a quick and efficient experience, making it an ideal stop for a fast and satisfying meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Just got back from Vietnam and it’s been disappointing looking for all the amazing tastes locally.Got the #1 and first bite was POW, I’m back in Hanoi having my first Bahn mi. The flavor is really complex and subtle. Pate was great consistency and the glue to pair all the different meats and flavors together. But the star of the show was the bread. It didn’t bunch up and become cardboard after a few bites. It stayed flaky, light and airy throughout. Definitely fresh bread just like in Vietnam. Was leaving and I saw they had a special with sticky rice, pate and other meats and thought I tried. It is soooo good. The preserved vegetables in the meat is like a drug. So delicious. No indoor seating or restroom, cash only no frill joint. Those are my favorite. Service was friendly and to the point. Place was clean and spotless. Definitely going and heard they have a sister restaurant which is next on my list.
September 16 · G HThe regular (number 1) Bánh Mi Sandwich is good. The bread is flaky, the fillings are fresh and in good proportion. For $8-$9 you get a decent sized sandwich. Bring cash the shop is cash only and can get busy.
August 03 · Jonathan LimHole in the wall with helpful and industrious atmosphere. People at the counter were focused and super nice.Sandwich was fantastic. Noticed they also have the rice roll ravioli with woodear mushroom --- one of my faves but not easy to find. Definitely trying that next!No bathroom, no inside seating but they do have a wooden bench outside the door. Has some coverage so good spot if the weather isn't good to take sandwich to the park but won't work if it's pouring.
June 15 · Ji_Hea KimDelicious. Fresh. Made to order sandwiches. The bread is devine. Each sandwich tastes different. The coffee has a nice nutty rich roast with the perfect cream. The kindest staff too. I ordered #1 & #8
June 26 · Anna H4.2/5 #8 BBQ Pork Banh Mi -- housemade bread is very crisp with a light crumb, generously filled with pork and carrot/daikon/cucumber, finished with some mayo!We visited on a weekend afternoon, there was a line about ~5 ahead of us, and the service is on the slower side but each sandwhich is made to order! There is no seating, but plenty of benches at Columbus Park nearby to enjoy your sandwich!
