I understand why people love this place (oldest running French restaurant in NY) and I too enjoyed everything except I thought the food was just average (ordered the Steak Frites). The service, atmosphere and art work (look closely if you like puzzles) really add to the experience and be sure to check out the FAQ page on the back of the menu.
March 31 · David RyanIf you can get beyond the maître d' (William), who can be a bit acerbic & abrasive -- especially if you don't have a reservation, the traditional French and authentic "bonne femme" cooking - is well worth it. You will find incredible French offerings not found elsewhere in NYC (e.g., cervelles de veau); the family recipes & preparation come from the matriarch ( La Grand-mère ) who passed away years ago, but her magic survives. The servers are charming.I am delighted that this unpretentious, "hole-in-the-wall" institution has weathered challenges of being in business for 60+ years. It is simply wonderful ... even the dusty framed jigsaw puzzle of Davide's Coronation of Napoleon will grow on you after a while.

Our waiter, however, stole the show and was a delight every time she came to check up on us.The atmosphere is immersive, the noise of NYC left behind as you enter patriotic France and its Parisian ambience - music and decor to match. You forget whereabouts in the world you really are.Our courses were exquisite, authentically French, and were worth every penny. The wide selection of extremely-reasonable wines complement the dishes beautifully.More restaurants in Manhattan should strive to be as unique as Chez Napoleon. Would not hesitate to return.

Chez Napoleon 365 W50th St quite close to 9th Ave.Opened in 1960, it’s an old school French restaurant that is both charming and cheeky. They have a sign that reads along the lines of, “If you take a picture of your food we will give you a complementary roll of the eyes.” They take their food VERY seriously while having a little fun with their own attitude.The service is superb! Unrushed, friendly with humor and charm.My wife has asparagus soup & sole (just delightful) and I had a green salad and the cassoulet. This is something I often make for my father around the holidays and theirs is FAR superior to my own. I have a LOT to learn!We finished the night with a soufflé with raspberry sauce. I could’ve eaten a thousand of them! Absolutely delightful.No food pictures, because I didn’t wanna get in trouble!We’ll be back!

If you’re looking for a cozy, quiet place to enjoy some home cooked-style French meals, this is it!We ordered the rabbit stew and sea bass which were excellent, although the stew was too salty for our taste. They give you tasty complementary bread, and the stew came with some green beans which I absolutely loved as a palate cleanser.Their soufflé is a must-have! It’s expensive, but it’s something you can’t try anywhere else in the US. It looks enormous but is mostly air inside - 2 people can easily finish it so don’t be intimidated by the size like we were.Reservations are a must here. The restaurant is tiny so you will most likely not have any luck with a walk-in.Lastly, it’s worth mentioning the service was great. They were very friendly, and I’d definitely come again!
