This place is amazing, food tasted just like my mom’s cooking. It is pricey and that’s only thing that upsets me because this homestyle food should not be more than $20However, everything outside of great is authentic. The ladies working there are sweet but they clearly do this for the love of food and for the Guatemalan will to serve. But they are NOT service industry workers meaning, don’t come in here expecting restaurant hospitality. The hospitality here is for their own people, in that way, this could seem unattractive to tourists, non Spanish speaking people, this spot is definitely a ‘If You Know You Know.’But if you do know, then you’re in for a really great meal that tastes like home. There’s a reason all the food delivery messengers come here for their lunch. It’s Guatemala in New York.I got: Bistec De Pollo w/ Rice and Beans + Tortillas + Water + Pastry for $24.50 - David Mejia

While specific menu items may change, popular dishes include Bistec De Pollo served with rice and beans, and the exceptional carne with pepian stew. The flavors are described by patrons as tasting just like a mom's cooking, a high compliment that speaks to the authenticity and care put into each dish. In addition to the main courses, the deli also offers a variety of small plates and bakery items, which are perfect for a quick bite or for taking home. The offerings also include great coffee and healthy options, making it a versatile choice for any meal of the day. The food is made to be shared and savored, and the rich, complex flavors are a highlight for those who know and love Guatemalan cuisine. Deli El Chapincito stands out in New York City's competitive food scene for a few key reasons. Its authentic homestyle cooking and casual atmosphere are what make it a true local favorite. Here are some of the key highlights that define the experience:

  • Authentic "Home-Style" Food: The food is the biggest highlight. Customers repeatedly describe it as tasting "just like my mom’s cooking," a testament to its authenticity and quality. The flavors are rich, the portions are generous, and the dishes are made with a genuine love for the food.

  • Counter-Serve and Quick Service: The deli's counter-serve model ensures a quick and efficient experience. This is a great feature for those on a tight schedule who still want a delicious, homemade meal without the wait of a traditional sit-down restaurant.

  • Hidden Gem / "If You Know You Know" Vibe: The unassuming exterior and the lack of traditional "restaurant hospitality" (in the American sense) create a unique, authentic local vibe. This makes it a place where you feel like you've discovered a secret spot, beloved by those who truly appreciate the cuisine and culture.

  • Guatemalan/Mexican Convenience Store: The deli also functions as a small convenience store, offering a variety of Guatemalan and Mexican products and bakery items. This adds to its authenticity and provides a great opportunity to explore more of the region's culinary culture.

  • Great Coffee: Despite being a deli, it is highlighted for its great coffee, making it a perfect spot for a quick caffeine fix in the morning or with your meal.

The deli’s casual atmosphere and focus on genuine food rather than formal service make it a unique and charming find in New York City.
