It stands out from the many high-end and fast-casual options by offering a genuine, no-frills Japanese dining experience with a focus on traditional comfort food and excellent value. For New Yorkers who know and appreciate good food, this place has become a quiet favorite, offering a slice of Tokyo's izakaya culture right on West 55th Street. It's the kind of place you go to for a consistently delicious and satisfying meal, without the long waits or inflated prices often associated with its neighborhood.
The name "Donburiya" itself provides a clue to its specialty, as "donburi" refers to a Japanese rice bowl dish, and this restaurant truly excels at them. However, as customer reviews attest, the menu extends far beyond just donburi, offering a wide variety of Japanese cuisine, from hearty ramen to delicate sashimi. The combination of authentic flavors, a cozy atmosphere, and a price point that is "very solid... for the neighborhood" makes it a standout choice. What is worth choosing Donburiya? The answer is a rare combination of authenticity, quality, and value in a city that often demands a high price for any of those. The customer reviews are a strong testament to this, with one customer confirming the food's authenticity after having visited Japan. This is the kind of praise that can only be earned by a kitchen dedicated to its craft. The focus on classic, comforting dishes like donburi and katsu is what makes it so appealing. These are not trendy, fusion-style dishes, but a taste of genuine Japanese home cooking.
The value proposition is also a major draw. As a customer noted, the price point is "very solid" for the Midtown area. This means you can enjoy a full, generous meal with high-quality ingredients without breaking the bank. The friendly staff and cozy izakaya vibe create a welcoming environment that feels more personal than many of the large, corporate-owned restaurants in the area. For anyone seeking a true Japanese dining experience—whether you're a connoisseur or just looking for a delicious, satisfying meal—Donburiya is an excellent choice. It’s a hidden gem that delivers on its promise of authentic food, great value, and a friendly atmosphere, making it a place you'll want to return to again and again.

Donburiya Reviews
I’ve been here a handful of times - it’s deliciously well-priced authentic Japanese food (with a very nice izakaya vibe), and the space is large enough that I have never had to wait for a table. The menu is pretty long (can be a bit difficult à la decision paralysis) and they have a (cute handwritten) menu of specials, so I must admit I haven’t tried most of their dishes (nor any of their drinks). But what I have gotten has consistently been fantastic - some highlights include:- Oroshi tonkatsu set: the katsu is so yummy with a wonderful texture (fried to a good balance of not being too oily or soggy). The whole set comes with a generous amount of food (soup, salad as well), and specifically I just love the taste of oroshi in the light dashi broth. I’ve also had the curry katsu before - the curry itself was pretty good, nothing too notable to point out, and the katsu was similarly delicious.- Sukiyaki donburi was a particular favourite. The sweet flavour went with the tender sliced beef so nicely, and it came with a good assortment of tofu, veggies, and egg for a very well balanced dish. Yakiniku don was yummy too - not too salty, beef savoury and well-cooked, and the rice/sauce combo complemented everything nicely.I’ve had the chicken karaage as an appetiser a few times before, and it was a bit inconsistent each time (sometimes a bit soggy breading / not tender meat). I feel like it’s not really worth the price (especially compared to the cost most of the main dishes on the menu).Indeed, overall the price point is very solid here - esp for the neighbourhood. Even though I read some reviews suggesting that they are a no-tip restaurant, I fear this may no longer be the case, sigh. Would love to come back again soon!

July 08 · KPWe were walking around the area today and decided to stop here for lunch. It was not crowded so we got a table right away. We ordered the Tonkatsu Teppanyaki box and one Hiyashi Chaka. Both were quite good except too salty for our tastes. Good portions. Good service and reasonable price.
June 28 · THE EXPLORERAbsolutely loved my lunch here! The food was a fair priced deal (especially for Manhattan) considering how much you get. Everything was flavorful and the service was attentive. Will be back!
July 26 · Chloe FreAmazing Japanese food! I ordered the Ebiten Udon and the Tonkatsu Teppen Yaki Set — both were absolutely delicious. The service was excellent, and I loved the atmosphere. I’ll definitely return to try more dishes and highly recommend!
