Golden Steamer is a place that feels like a hidden gem, even with its long-standing popularity. It is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates a straightforward, authentic culinary experience.

What is worth choosing Golden Steamer:
Choosing Golden Steamer is all about embracing a classic New York experience that is both authentic and affordable. The primary reason to visit is for the steamed buns. While other bakeries might focus on a variety of pastries, Golden Steamer has perfected its main offering, creating buns that are consistently praised for their texture and taste. The fluffy white steamed buns, in particular, are a fan favorite, a testament to the skill and tradition that goes into each one. This focus on a few key items and doing them exceptionally well is a hallmark of a great local spot.
The affordability of the food is another major draw. In a city where prices are constantly rising, Golden Steamer offers a delicious and filling meal that won't break the bank. This makes it a perfect stop for students, budget-conscious diners, or anyone looking for a cheap, satisfying snack. The fact that they accept SNAP/EBT is a further testament to their commitment to serving the entire community, making it a valuable resource for residents.
However, it is important to be aware of a few key details that might impact your experience. As noted in customer reviews, the bakery is cash-only, so it is essential to have cash on hand before you visit. Additionally, some reviews mention that the buns may not always be hot, which can be a disappointment for some. This suggests that the experience can vary, but for the most part, the consistency and quality of the buns are what keep customers coming back. The bakery’s quick service model is designed for efficiency, and it's best to go in with the mindset of grabbing a quick, delicious bite rather than expecting a hot, made-to-order meal. For a taste of authentic, no-frills Chinese steamed buns and other comfort foods, Golden Steamer is a worthwhile and rewarding choice that truly represents the culinary spirit of New York.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1didnt know they have another location which has been here two years ago per their staff! But glad I stumbled upon it as we were heading to their other location which was closed on July4th. Luckily this one at Grand St was open! yay!!This location is much bigger than the first and still had a lot of options to choose from. Not just breads but other quick eats too like rice noodles and dumplings. But as usual we were here for their steamed pork buns. A lot of people go for the roasted one, but ive always preferred the fluffiness of the white steamed buns. So good!aaand…still cash only.
July 09 · Kimberly TuanoBought 2 steamed salty yolk bun at 9:30am and their buns are not even hot. I asked them and they said they are all like that.. Usually salty yolk buns are supposed to have a runny middle but this is solid. You can tell this bun is cold. Super disappointing, I heard this place was good and popular and opened this new location.
September 02 · K CI ordered the iced milk tea, minced pork/shrimp rice roll, steamed shrimp rice roll. Ice milk tea was decent and the minced pork/shrimp rice roll was decently flavored but the steamed shrimp rice roll was not too good in my opinion. There was barely any steamed shrimp (just about 4/5 by my count) so you could not get one per bite. I would say get the buns here to eat and maybe the minced pork/shrimp rice roll but the steamed rice rolls don't even bother. A few mins walk away to Yi Ji Shi Mo is where you should go if you want really good steamed rice rolls.
June 15 · Alex Kwokit’ it’s important to know that there is no seating and they are cash only. The buns are so big and fluffy. I eat 2 and i’m full. My favorites are the pumpkin and the roast pork. We always come here when we visit NYC
September 12 · Karla AliceaTheir egg tarts are amazing! I ordered them for my wedding and they were such a hit with our guests. My husband and I had tried egg tarts from 6 popular bakeries in Chinatown to find the best ones for our wedding (and also an excuse for us to have egg tarts). Golden Steamer was our winner for overall taste, presentation, and size. The person (might be the owner) I was communicating with was very responsive. Ordering was easy. I only placed the order 3 days in advanced.
