KAI Sweets Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Edgewater’s Premier Japanese Bakery Experience at Mitsuwa Marketplace
For residents across New Jersey, especially those in Bergen County and the greater North Jersey area, KAI Sweets represents a delightful and essential stop for authentic Japanese confections and café offerings. More than just a simple bakery, KAI Sweets operates as a specialized Japanese restaurant and café, nestled conveniently within the famous Mitsuwa Marketplace at 595 River Road in Edgewater, NJ. This location, which is a key cultural and retail hub for Japanese imported goods and cuisine, is the perfect home for a shop dedicated to unique and expertly crafted desserts.
KAI Sweets has established a stellar reputation throughout the tri-state area, largely on the strength of its signature item: the mochi donut. These are not your average American-style donuts; they offer a distinctively Japanese texture—springy, chewy, light, and airy—making them a unique indulgence that is less greasy than traditional varieties. The popularity of the mochi donut has solidified KAI Sweets' standing as a must-visit spot for anyone seeking high-quality, specialty baked goods in New Jersey.
While the mochi donuts draw many visitors, the full menu at KAI Sweets is quite extensive, blending classic bakery items with authentic Japanese café fare. Customers can enjoy a wide selection of customizable bubble teas, freshly prepared Japanese-style crepes, and even heartier meal options that align with its Japanese restaurant categorization. This fusion of a grab-and-go dessert spot with a comprehensive beverage and light meal menu makes it a favorite for a “quick visit” before or after shopping at Mitsuwa Marketplace. The shop is noted for its clean, well-organized space and its colorful displays, which promise a fun and inviting experience for local New Jersey patrons.

KAI Sweets is perfectly situated at 595 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ 07020, USA, inside the renowned Mitsuwa Marketplace. The context of being inside Mitsuwa Marketplace—one of the most authentic Japanese supermarkets in the US—means that the shop is part of a larger, dynamic culinary ecosystem.
Accessibility is implicitly excellent due to its placement within a major retail hub. The marketplace location ensures ample parking and is a known landmark in Edgewater, simplifying navigation for new and returning customers. However, customers should note an important detail derived from customer feedback: KAI Sweets is primarily a takeout or grab-and-go counter. What is Worth Choosing: A Destination for Japanese Dessert Lovers in NJ
For New Jersey dessert aficionados, KAI Sweets is unequivocally worth choosing for several compelling reasons that center on unique product offerings and excellent value. The primary draw remains the mochi donuts. This product alone offers a superior, fresh alternative to standard donuts, praised for their unique, satisfyingly chewy texture and diverse, authentic Japanese flavors like matcha and black sesame. The customer consensus on the core products, like the donuts and waffle pops (waffles that look like ice cream bars), is overwhelmingly positive, citing them as "so soft and chewy" and often ranking them among the best donuts in the region.
Beyond the donuts, the availability of Japanese-style crepes and a sophisticated Bubble Tea menu—including creative options like Oreo Milk W/Coffee Jelly—makes KAI Sweets a full-service dessert and drink destination. The value proposition, especially for the mochi donuts which are often sold with a "Buy 5 Get 1 Free" promotion, is excellent for families or for those looking to sample various flavors.
It is important for local patrons to be aware of the operational focus, as one review highlighted inconsistencies in customer service, specifically regarding minor requests like hot water and the occasional issue with the freshness of secondary products like macarons. Customers should always prioritize the freshly made, signature items—the mochi donuts and crepes—where the business truly excels. The overwhelming majority of positive feedback centers on the speed, cleanliness, and, most importantly, the delightful taste and texture of these core items.
In conclusion, KAI Sweets offers New Jersey residents a concentrated burst of modern Japanese café culture and culinary innovation. It is the definitive stop in Bergen County for an authentic, light, and delicious mochi donut, a refreshing bubble tea, or a freshly prepared crepe, securing its place as a valued part of the Mitsuwa Marketplace dining experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1What should have been a quick, simple stop left me shaking my head. I came in with my own cup and asked for some hot water. Previously they charged a quarter. Today, instead of a small courtesy, I was told it would cost $1.07. To charge for something so basic felt unwelcoming, even petty.Hoping the pastries would redeem the visit, I picked up a macaroon, which wasn’t cheap. They looked charming in the case—colorful, inviting, so cute with their faces. However, the moment I tasted it, the façade fell apart. It was mushy, tired, and clearly past its best. The kind of staleness that makes you wonder how long it had been sitting out. What struck me most wasn’t just the stingy charge or the stale sweets, but the way the staff were left to struggle. The young woman at the counter was clearly confused about how to handle the hot-water request. She retreated to the back, searching for guidance from her manager (who never bothered to come out), instead staying hidden.Watching her be left alone in that situation said more about the management than anything else: Not just poor training, but a lack of leadership and basic decency. This place that presents itself as warm and inviting shouldn’t fail its customers and its own employees in the most basic ways. If you value hospitality, freshness, or fairness, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
September 20 · John PThis is a wonderful sweet bakery store inside Mitsua. It’s for take out, not space to sit inside the store. Very clean and colorful. They have waffle pop (waffle that looks like ice cream bar), mochi donuts, bubble teas and few other types of bakery snacks. We ordered the cookies and cream waffle pop and the strawberry mochi donut. The barista handed us order within a minute. Super quick service and easy checkout. We loved both waffle and donut. They were so soft and chewy. If we are in Mitsua again, will stop by for more sweet snacks in future.
June 23 · Nehal AhmedThis is only a review of the Mochi Donut side of Kai Sweets. One of the best donuts I’ve had don’t feel guilty about eating. The donuts do start to get hard if you keep them more than a day after they are baked from the store. So these are best enjoyed as quickly as you can after buying them. Flavors can be limited as some flavors need more time and come out at noon but the early morning flavor might sell out if you wait.I haven’t tried the crepe and tea section of Kai Sweets yet.I love the donuts but they are higher in price like premium flavor Krispy Kreme donuts.
August 20 · Richard GoA Taste of Japan in Edgewater — Kai Sweets Delivers Mochi Magic ✨ Tucked inside Mitsuwa Marketplace, Kai Sweets is a hidden gem that redefines what mochi should taste like. Unlike the overly sweet, mass-produced versions you find elsewhere, their mochi is delicate, chewy, and unmistakably authentic — because every ingredient is imported directly from Japan. You can taste the difference in every bite.Whether it’s the black sesame mochi donut or the seasonal daifuku, each piece is crafted with precision and care. The texture is sublime — soft yet satisfyingly chewy — and the flavors are balanced, never overpowering. It’s clear that Kai Sweets isn’t just selling desserts; they’re offering a cultural experience. The presentation is charming, the staff is warm, and the quality is unmatched. If you’re craving a true Japanese confectionery experience without hopping on a plane, this is the place. Go early — the best flavors sell out fast, and once you’ve tried them, you’ll understand why.
September 08 · Marina FridlyandMy favorite mochi donuts thus far! I tried the Black Sesame, Oreo, and Strawberry Cream mochi donuts. Out of the three mochi donut shops I've tried, they were my favorite because of the texture. The ones I had in NYC were too glutinous. These had a pleasing chew that wasn't slimy or gummy. Wife L🍓VED the strawberry cream. I should've got two😅
