A Return to One of My All-Time Favorite PubsI first visited Mick Sorely’s Old Ale House alone in 2012, and this time, I came back with my wife.More than ten years have passed, but the place looks just as cool and timeless as I remembered.A female bartender was working the counter—stylish, composed, and friendly.I tried to order some nuts with my beer, saying “Nuts please!” (probably sounding like weird Japanese-English), but it didn’t get through… so I gave up and ordered cheese instead. What arrived was a plate of cheese with crackers and sliced onions—and to my surprise, the combination was absolutely perfect with beer. So perfect, in fact, that I ended up drinking six pints all by myself. After all these years, this place still holds its charm.Definitely one of those bars I’d love to return to again and again. - TenpuraWalker

McSorley’s Old Ale House Introduce

In a city that is constantly reinventing itself, certain institutions stand as living monuments to a bygone era. McSorley’s Old Ale House is one such place. As one of the oldest continuously operating pubs in New York City, it offers an experience that is unlike any other. Stepping through its doors is like stepping back in time, with a rich history that is palpable in every detail, from the sawdust-covered floors to the walls adorned with decades of memorabilia. It’s a place where tradition, simplicity, and camaraderie are the main attractions, drawing a mix of dedicated locals, curious tourists, and groups of friends looking for a truly authentic New York experience.

McSorley's is famous for its no-frills, no-fuss approach. They have been doing things their way since 1854, and it works. The drink menu is famously limited to just two options: a light ale and a dark ale, both served in pairs of small mugs. This simplicity is part of the pub's charm, encouraging patrons to focus on conversation and the unique atmosphere rather than a long list of craft beers or complex cocktails. The pub’s commitment to its heritage is so strong that it remains a cash-only establishment, a small detail that adds to its timeless feel. The friendly and efficient service, a highlight for many visitors, ensures that even when the place is packed, you’ll never have to wait long for a drink.

This isn’t just a bar; it's a piece of New York City history. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the stories in the air, a fact celebrated in everything from the wishbones hanging above the bar—left there by soldiers who went off to war—to the famous "Good Ale, Raw Onions, and No Ladies" motto from a time when the pub was a men-only establishment. McSorley’s is a destination that captures the spirit of old New York, a place where you can sit down, relax, and appreciate the simple pleasures of good beer and great company.
