Badass Bagels Rye Introduce
If you're a New Yorker, you know the search for a truly great bagel is an endless quest. Forget the mass-produced, bland rounds—a new kind of artisan bagel has been making waves in Westchester, offering a distinct and delicious experience that is truly worth the drive. We're talking about Badass Bagels in Rye, a shop that boldly redefines what a bagel can be by embracing the slow-food movement and the power of wild yeast sourdough.
Badass Bagels Rye is more than just a bagel shop; it’s a destination for naturally leavened, hand-crafted goods that boast a light, chewy, crunchy texture and a complex, tangy flavor that only a long fermentation process can deliver. This is a far cry from your typical quick-bake spot, focusing instead on high-quality ingredients, a four-day process, and a creative, 'no-BS' approach to food that has earned them a loyal following in the New York region.
The shop, founded by Jennifer Balin as a pandemic-era pivot, takes pride in its 100% wild yeast sourdough starter, which is rye-flour based. This proprietary starter is the foundation for every bagel, contributing to a lighter, airier interior and a crisp outer crust that sets these bagels apart. For those who appreciate food made with care, attention to sourcing, and a unique flavor profile, Badass Bagels Rye offers a refreshing twist on a New York staple.
In a competitive food landscape like Westchester, being called the "best bagels around" by a local is high praise, and Badass Bagels has earned this reputation by simply doing things differently—and better.

Features / Highlights
What sets Badass Bagels Rye apart from the crowd in the Tri-State area are a few key features that highlight their commitment to quality and innovation:
- 100% Sourdough Bagels: The core of the business is the naturally leavened, rye flour-based sourdough starter. The result is a bagel that is light, chewy, crunchy, and has a pleasant, complex tang, offering a unique texture and flavor profile that stands out from a standard commercial-yeast bagel.
- Slow-Food Process: The bagels are not mass-produced; they are lovingly referred to as "slow food." The entire process, from feeding the starter to the final bake, takes more than four days, showcasing a dedication to traditional, unhurried fermentation for superior taste and digestibility.
- Uniquely Flavored Gourmet Schmears: The shop is famous for its creative and memorable cream cheeses and spreads. Options like Hot Honey Pistachio, Cowboy Candy (candied jalapeños), Preserved Lemon and Fried Capers, and Smokey Black Garlic turn a simple bagel into a gourmet experience. Their Plain cream cheese is described by customers as being exceptionally smooth and "churned," not whipped.
- Commitment to Quality Ingredients: The owner is committed to using organic, non-GMO, and regionally/locally sourced ingredients, including unenriched flours milled specifically for them. Their process avoids commercial yeast and many of the common additives found in other baked goods.
- Vegan and Gluten-Free Options: To be inclusive, Badass Bagels offers a popular, dairy-free Vegan schmear (usually a blend of chives, scallions, pickled veg, and preserved lemon) and Gluten-Free bagel options (sold frozen and baked in a separate area to avoid cross-contamination in their facility), ensuring more people can enjoy their products.
- Punk-Rustic Atmosphere: The storefront features a unique interior with a "punk-rustic" or "striking all-black interior" atmosphere, a departure from the brightly lit, traditional bagel shop aesthetic, adding to the overall distinctive brand experience.

What is Worth Choosing
For New Yorkers who have high standards for their breakfast and sandwich foundation, Badass Bagels Rye is a highly worthwhile choice. The primary reason to choose this shop is its dedication to the sourdough method, which produces a bagel that is fundamentally different—and arguably superior—to the standard yeast-leavened variety. The texture is a remarkable combination of a crisp exterior and a light, airy, chewy interior, and the natural tanginess of the sourdough elevates the flavor profile.
The shop is highly recommended for customers who are tired of the usual bagel catalog and are seeking a healthier, 'no-BS' approach to food. The creative spread menu is a game-changer; one customer noted they enjoyed the everything sourdough bagel with the plain cream cheese, highlighting its superior smoothness. However, for a truly memorable experience, choosing one of the 'badass' schmears is a must. The Cowboy Candy and Hot Honey Pistachio are standout choices for a mix of sweet, spicy, and savory.
Furthermore, the Lickety Lox sandwich is a gourmet delight, featuring house-cured gravlax and a host of fresh toppings. Simply put, if you are looking for an artisan bagel that is made with care, commitment to quality ingredients, and a dash of rebellious flavor, Badass Bagels Rye is poised to become your new favorite bagel spot in Westchester. It’s an ideal quick stop for those who value unique food experiences and are willing to pay a slight premium for truly superior quality and taste.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1If you're looking to try something new then look no further. This unique bagel shop adds a twist with your usual bagel catalog, from unique butters and spreads to diverse bagels, this is not your average bagel shop. The staff was very friendly and the storefront had a punk-rustic atmosphere. I enjoyed a everything sourdough bagel with a plain cream cheese which is much smoother than most. While priced at $6 a little more than I would like to spend, it was enjoyable none the less. I will be back and be bold to try one of their different bagels and or spreads. Much luck to the owners and their future in Rye.
March 05 · Zach FullerLived in Rye for most of my life. Best bagels around Westchester. Period.Healthy, fresh and no BS - my favorite!I got their poppyseed bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was delicious. I didn’t get a chance to snap a photo but let me tell you, the bagel to go box is licked clean.I highly recommend this place. My one constructive criticism would be maybe to have on some light music on the inside. Other than that 10/10!!
September 10 · Zoe HanfmannGood news: The flavors are interesting and it’s new so it gets a pass on some things. Bad news: my bagel was very undercooked in one spot(hard to see in the photo) and the hot honey pistachio cream cheese just tastes like jalapeños and pickles. I hope this team turns up the operations dial because the menu and location show promise. Prices also need to come a bit back down to earth.
April 02 · RichardIn short: this is the “wood-fired pizza” of bagels. A niche I didn’t know I needed but I can’t go back! Please eat these so they stay in business and I don’t have to go back to the cold greyscale bagel world I didn’t know I was living in!!—My online recipe thoughts—I was truthfully predisposed to not like this place, the brand isn’t really my taste and I’m a huge fan of Hand Rolled in town, and I thought I knew what a bagel was and had made my stance on the best ones in the area. These bagels are a totally different thing. These bagels are like what wood fired pizza is to NY style pizza. More elegant nuance in each bite. The richness of the grain that’s brought out by the sourdough culture mixes beautifully with their enigmatic cream cheese. The flavors and textures are just not anything that’s in another bagel shop around here or anywhere that I’ve experienced. They have pumpernickel everything bagels! That’s the dream team I’ve always wanted to see! I also would have taken a strong stance on never toasting a fresh bagel but here that flavor is the strings in the orchestra similar to wood fired pizza. That all being said I think it’s a very different thing and suits a different mood so I do still feel both places can exist in harmony. Though I will say, if a wood fired pizza place opened up in Rye and the slices were the same price as sunrise I’d probably find myself in there most of the time…Lastly, Eric, the guy that works there most often, is top class. He really grounds the experience in there and brings more of an old school NY feel that balances the very new-age brand. Him and the furniture they chose really are the bridge from the old school bagel world to the modern era which is much appreciated. It’s a very open design in there and Eric makes that feel comfortable and welcoming rather than awkward and the importance of that can’t be understated.
April 13 · Matthew OlsonStopped in to shop local and get some breakfast. Kind of disappointed about all the hype. $12 for three bagels? C’mon. Also makes me wonder about a bagel shop that is empty at 8am on a Friday. Maybe all their business is on the weekends? There was nothing special about the bagels. They didn’t have a good crust or chew on the inside. And for goodness sakes, if I want to go shopping for t-shirts, I will go to the Gap. Focus on the food, not all the merch. The space is not inviting nor are the prices or the food. Do yourself a favor and go to a bagel shop that really knows their business.
