When you're looking for a bakery in New Jersey, Balthazar Bakery is a choice that rises above the rest for several compelling reasons. The most important factor is, without a doubt, the unparalleled quality of its products. This isn't just baking; it's a craft. Every item, from the simplest croissant to the most intricate pastry, is made with precision and expertise. The result is a taste and texture that is consistently described as a treat, a "heavenly" experience that makes every bite worthwhile. For those who consider themselves a true lover of bread or pastry, this bakery is a pilgrimage site.
The focused, no-frills approach to the storefront is also a major plus. While it might seem like a drawback to not have seating, it means the entire operation is streamlined to provide the freshest, highest-quality product to you as quickly as possible. The lines may form, but they move fast, and the short wait is well worth the reward. It's an efficient model that prioritizes the most important thing: the food. This makes it a perfect stop for a quick morning pastry run or an afternoon pick-me-up.
Finally, the selection of truly special items makes it a standout. While you can get a regular croissant anywhere, Balthazar's version is described as "flaky and delicious." But it’s their signature items like the kouign-amann and the "moreish" monkey bread that are truly unique. These are the kinds of treats that you don't find at every corner bakery. The canelés are also highlighted as the "best" a customer has ever tasted, with a perfect combination of a caramelized outside and a soft, flavorful inside. Choosing Balthazar means choosing to treat yourself to an artisanal experience, a brief but blissful moment of pure culinary delight, making it a truly valuable part of the New Jersey food scene.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is not your local cafe hangout. Come to think of it, I don't even think they sell coffees or any other beverage. There are no seats, no tables, and only a little bit of standing room. But this is HEAVEN for all carb connoisseurs. Most of the building seems to be dedicated to (1) on-site equipment and (2) a small storefront where goods are prettily displayed behind a glass wall. And then a teeny, tiny area where you stand in line and salivate as you await your turn. Trying to decide what to get is difficult, since you don't get to see what's actually available until you get to the front of the line, and then you have to make some quick decisions while the rest of the line waits and harrumphs behind you.I've had a ton of their croissants (the regular was flaky and delicious, the almond tasted like millions of almonds died in the making of it, and the flan was just as if a plate of flan and croissant had a baby). The beloved kouign-amann is a croissant-like flaky pastry with a creme brûlée crackling top. The monkey bread is hopelessly moreish. Suffice it to say, I've been eating my way through Balthazar little by little, and nothing has disappointed. If you're in the area and consider yourself a lover of bread or pastry, this is a must-visit. Parking is extremely limited, but there's a high turnover rate of cars since most people are leaving right after they purchase. Lines can be long, but move pretty quickly.
February 04 · Jane CBalthazar is a true gem! They have the best canelé I’ve ever tasted—perfectly caramelized on the outside and soft on the inside. Their cookies are absolutely delightful, and the almond croissant is just heavenly 🙌🏻. Every bite feels like a treat. A must-visit for anyone who loves great pastries!
September 25 · Susana LabradaYou cannot go wrong here. There's a reason why this place's products are carried by numerous cafes in the city. You might have to wait in a line on weekends, especially in the morning. They carry both regular and savory pastries and have seasonal specials throughout the year. If you are a first time, try the custard flan croissant, it is very, very good.Unfortunately only for takeout. This Place has no seatings available, nothing. Not even utensils nor napkins.I wish they would add outdoor seating.Parking is somewhat limited but customers are going in and out quickly.
July 28 · Alessandro FratiFinally, I had a chance to visit Balthazar Bakery and was impressed by their pastries. This place is small mostly for “grab and go” They also sell a variety of good quality products and of course amazing bakeries. Great selection of bread, pastries, and cakes. I chose plain croissant $3,75, cardamom bun $3,75, almond croissant $4,50, pistachio cookie $3,50 and buckwheat hazelnut bouchon $4 (gluten-free). Everything was delicious, my favorite is the plain croissant and buckwheat.
May 04 · Anastasia MerkNo where to eat inside but wow, the food was so delicious! You will not find better pastries or baked goods aside from going to France. The Tomato Eggplant Pissaladiere was so amazing! One of the best savory pastries I’ve ever had. Their scallion cheddar scone was also very flavorful and the seasonal fruit galette was very tasty. Will definitely be going back.
