★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am a huge fan of Chinese skewers and so, when I heard that a new spot opened in Manhattan, I had to try it. This Chinese skewers spot is bright, casual, and super fun to go with friends. The seats are surprisingly low to the ground, so note if you have mobility issues. Otherwise, it's a comfortable spot and good for a late night vibe. The premise here is that any skewer is $1.25. While it sounds like a good deal, it honestly adds up pretty fast and the portions are as big as the ones that I've seen at other skewer spots (such as those in Flushing). The quality isn't bad but nothing crazy. I did really like their appetizers and additional plates that you could call though, such as their cold noodles, fried pork, or fried buns with condensed milk. Overall, it was good but I think if I really wanted skewers, I would go to Flushing for more affordable prices and better portions.
June 19 · Mia HuynhChubby Skewers was both our first and last meal in New York and it couldn’t have been better. We found it late at night after a long day of traveling, and it was such a relief to find a place open with great vibes. The atmosphere is fun and totally different from anything we have back home. The food was amazing. I especially loved the scallop skewers, the wagyu beef, and pretty much all the seafood. The scallop on the shell appetizer was a standout.Big thanks to the staff, especially Ming, who was super friendly and helpful. Can’t wait to come back next time I’m in the city!
July 23 · Zoe SalongaA Chinese skewer restaurant with good street food concept but slightly disappointing food. I’d recommend it for fun group outing because it’s very interactive since you roast the skewers yourself, don’t expect authentic flavors.I loved the format of the low chair seating that’s meant to simulate street food. That said, if you are bigger or have mobility issues, it may not be comfortable for you.The issue with the skewers and food there in general was that it was on the sweeter side. Authentic Chinese skewers should be mostly salty and cumin flavored - not sweet like Korean bbq. If you enjoy sweet meats, great; if not, you may find the marinate of the meats a bit too sickly sweet.Another issue was the lack of good vegetable/vegetarian options. I’m a meat eater but I like to roast veggies - this restaurant was missing key Chinese vegetarian skewer item: no chives, no gluten, no eggplant.Lastly, it was a bit difficult to talk with people at my table due to the chimney set up. So it may not be a place of you want to have actual conversations.Hope this is helpful!
August 06 · Yuwei PanThis is an awesome spot to get skewers after a night out with friends. The atmosphere here is chill and the food is great. I came around 1am and was seated quickly. I loved the cumin and other spices at the table to season your skewers. There is a wide selection of skewers near the entrance and I love the buffet style of getting your own food. Overall this is a great spot to hangout with friends and enjoy well priced skewers.
July 24 · Matthew FrankowskiAverage food, fun experience, but probably wouldn’t go back. Do it once to experience it though! It’s a fun time.Space: It’s a big restaurant, but they jam the tables and chairs so close together it’s hard to move through it. We sat upstairs at a 4-person table with 2 people- it was so tight. The tables and chairs are kindergarten height so even as two short 5-foot gals we were barely a foot off the ground, it’s so low. With the tables equipped with the grills there’s nearly no space to put stuff. With 3 apps and a skewer tray each, we maxed out our table space. The tables/chairs are back to back with other table/chairs too. If it were a packed house we’d be at fire code and likely have tripping hazards guaranteed. It looked more spacious downstairs.Food: Average. Tempting to take many skewers at $1.30/piece but they add up fast! There is barely any meat on each skewer and many of the skewers themselves were sticky when I picked them up. Questionable dishwashing between uses. The kitchen-cooked dishes were okay. Nothing special and not the cheapest either. Best part about the food were actually the drinks! They were super delicious.Service: This was the best part. Plenty of staff to help and bring things around, explain how to cook certain things. The signage isn’t great so the staff were friendly and helpful. The downside is much of this restaurant’s experience is self-service cooking so the staff don’t actually do much besides clean up the plates and bring drinks + pre-cooked foods. Even refilling water is help yourself.Cool concept restaurant but if I wanted to pay the same price for a good meal I’d probably just check out other a la carte BBQ places nearby. This one took a lot of energy to figure out and the quality didn’t live up to expectations.
