I am so glad that a dear friend of mine recommended and brought me to this very unpretentious restaurant on Main Street, Flushing. Known for its authentic Taiwanese cuisine, this place doesn’t disappoint. Service is great with experienced servers that are attentive and friendly. To start, pickled napa cabbage and soft boiled peanuts are placed on the table. Followed by a complementary plate of sautéed cabbage in light oil. Succulent and delish. We ordered a few dishes to share and all of them were memorable! I particularly liked their shredded pork with Chinese celery. The Mapo tofu is simply full of flavor with the right amount of chili. The chicken in the clay pot is divine and full of flavors too. We also ordered the fresh clams with basil sautéed with bird’s eye chili. So good, we asked for more rice. All in all, a nice local restaurant with no frills but thrills your palette. Note: Cash only. 🤷🏽‍♂️ - B L

Main Street Imperial Taiwanese Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For New Yorkers seeking a truly authentic taste of Taiwanese home cooking,

Main Street Imperial Taiwanese

stands as a beloved and enduring local institution in the heart of Flushing, Queens. Situated on the famously busy Main Street, this restaurant is highly regarded by locals and Taiwanese expatriates alike for its commitment to traditional flavors and unpretentious dining experience. Unlike the fast-casual or highly modern Asian dining options that have proliferated across New York City, this establishment offers a "no frills but thrills your palate" environment, focusing its energy squarely on delivering rich, memorable, and comforting Taiwanese cuisine.

Categorized as both a Taiwanese and Chinese restaurant, its menu is a deep dive into the specific regional specialties of Taiwan. It goes far beyond the standard takeout fare, featuring classic "xiaochi" (small eats) and hearty entrees that New Yorkers often travel across boroughs to find. From the iconic Three Cup Chicken to savory noodle dishes and a variety of unique seafood and vegetable preparations, the offerings reflect a cuisine characterized by a blend of savory, sweet, and umami flavors, often enhanced by fragrant basil, soy sauce, and sesame oil.

Customer reviews highlight the palpable sense of authenticity and a dedicated staff, often noting the complimentary appetizers—like pickled napa cabbage and soft boiled peanuts—that are a hallmark of traditional Taiwanese hospitality. The atmosphere is casual, and the service is known to be quick, making it popular for both lunch and dinner. For anyone in the New York region looking to experience genuine Taiwanese comfort food in a setting that feels like a trip to Taipei, Main Street Imperial Taiwanese is a crucial stop in the Flushing dining circuit.
